Favorite Shoes For Fall
When moving to a new location there are a few things that must be found: a bakery (I don’t have early morning breakfast making skills, but I can consistently say, “Chocolate croissant, please”), a dry cleaner, and the hottest-yet-still-in-my-budget nail salon. After scouring the neighborhood, reading more yelp reviews than I care to mention, and dropping by to check pedicure chair brands, cleanliness, and magazine and nail polish selection, I finally decided to make an appointment at the salon just down the street from work.
As I was sitting in that glorious pedicure chair, counting all the reasons why I deserved this wonderful spa treatment, it suddenly hit me that my main reason for pedicures, SUMMER, would soon be coming to an end, and my frequent pedicure justification would be no longer! Oh the horrors!
Now don’t you fret, dear She She girls, summer is not actually over. (Did you run to the window to check that the leaves were still bright green and no crisp wind was blowing about?) I was just slightly over-exaggerating. I am not one of those people who count summer by the school system, I count summer based on weather temperature (although if it is still summer temps in October, things have gone a little too far).
I have thoroughly enjoyed my pedicure and sandal days here in Chicago. So many street fests, concerts, and outdoor dining options, I’ve been able to wear almost every sandal I own plus a pair of She She’s that I may have forgotten to give back to her after I begged to borrow them and promise to return in 48 hours time. Maybe she will accept them as her Christmas gift this year? Anyhoo, back to my pedicure chair epiphany: While I still have more sunshine and warm temps in my future, I did resolve to start doing some fall weather shoe research. My father is always telling me, “If you are prepared, you will not fear,” and while I am applying that to being prepared with appropriate footwear so I am not caught in sandals at an inopportune time, I think he really meant something like making sure I have enough money saved for life’s twists and turns. But if the changing of the seasons isn’t classified as a “turn” I don’t know what is.
So with my father’s blessing, I will begin my fall shoe wardrobe:
Textures: Fall is all about the rich luxurious texture. Suede is still at the top of the list and so is polished leather (especially in menswear). This season is really the time to embrace different skins than you are use to. Skins like snake, alligator, and calf hair (it’s just standard cow leather but with the hair still on, stop freaking out), are all perfect for fall. Real snake and alligator skin can get pricey, but there are now some really great embossed options, so I think it’s time to increase their presence in my closet.
Embellishments: This season sees everything from lady like to rock n’ roll inspired. Demure ruffles or rosette detail add some romance while studs and deep metallic hardware add some edge.
Colors: Colorblock is still going strong. Thankfully you’ve already embraced it, and can’t wait to add some colorblock shoes to the mix. Neutrals are a great breath of fresh air after a summer of bright neons. I have jewel tones from last year, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want a fresh pair of deep blue deliciousness. Probably something in a T-strap would be nice. This season’s evening shoe includes metallic. Metallic silver, gold, or rose gold will show up nicely in the fall evenings with a little black dress or black trousers with rose gold silk blouse.
Booties: Stop everything and get some booties. I love booties. They come in nearly every style, from wedge to stiletto, lace up, round toe, pointed toe, leather, suede, interesting soles, insets, or embellishments. I would even classify a wedge sneaker in the bootie category, and I would love to have a pair!
Boots: The grandmother of the bootie, the boot will be your work horse this season. A riding boot is sensible, refined, and slightly preppy, a cowgirl boot shows off your love of the land, and a moto boot adds a tough edge to your street style.
Pointed toe: While I like to believe the pointed toe never went out of style, it for sure is making a strong statement this fall. The pointed toe elongates the leg, and who doesn’t want that? Try it in flats, booties, or the standard pump.
Strappy: This glorious summer had us in strappy sandals, and the fall will be no different. Straps abound! Try an eye catching T-strap or a chic ankle strap. If you want your ankle to appear thinner, go for a well-fitting narrow ankle strap, but if you want to add some volume, put on a wide ankle strap and possibly something with a little embellishment.
Menswear: A co worker of mine is absolutely brilliant at the menswear trend. I, however, am not so brilliant. It is my goal this season to add a touch of menswear, and I am going to do that in button-front shirts and in shoes! Smoking slippers, oxfords, or loafers are on my list this season.
Well, I think that is it, for now. Enjoy the rest of pedicure season, and happy shopping!

Professional makeup artists to the stars for more than 25 years, Kathleen Crawford and Desne Holland announce the launch of their face 4 humanity skin care products. Spending years in research , and locating the most sustainable, pure and effective ingredients, the women have launched their line with two, ultra-quality products that care for the skin, while respecting the planet: The Face Serum and the Eye Cream. www.face4humanity.com
What makes face 4 humanity face serum and eye cream superior to other skin care products are key, unique and pure ingredients like PURIFIED RAIN/GLACIER WATER. Their proprietary process revitalizes the water by running it through a vortex of quartz crystals and silver coils, flushing away impurities and increasing oxygen levels. This revitalized water makes the membranes of the skin more receptive to the beneficial effects of the products. Certified organic ingredients such as Rose Hip oil, (reduces scarring and wrinkles), Horsetail Herb, rich in minerals and vitamin C (helps boost collagen production) and Rosemary known for its curative and rejuvenating properties (strengthens capillaries) are blended with rare plant-based hyaluronic acid. Their moisturizing formulas also include Certified biodynamic ingredients such as avocado oil and macadamia oil, which help to soften and moisturize the skin.
Face 4 humanity has an eco-conscious commitment from top to bottom: From the recyclable glass bottles and enclosed pumps, to the biodegradable tape used to seal the shipping boxes. The labels on the bottles themselves are FiberStone, made from crushed rock (no trees involved and 100% recyclable), as are the product inserts, bags and even their business cards. They even use non-toxic vegetable based printing inks. The shipping boxes are FSC certified.
"We are dedicated to having the smallest carbon footprint possible," states Holland. "Our commitment and dedication to quality and sustainability guides us in everything we do. Every element of our products is consistent with our principles," adds Crawford.
Notably, Crawford and Holland believe that "giving back is essential to moving forward." To that end, they have hand picked three non-profit organizations to benefit from their sales. For each product sold, they will donate $10 to one of the three charities chosen: IFAW (animal welfare,) Artists for Peace and Justice (peace, social justice and poverty) and Women's Earth Alliance (women's rights and the environment)
The face serum sells for $210.00 and the eye cream for $180.00; both products are available to order at www.face4humanity.com For more information about face 4 humanity products, please visit www.face4humanity

Tips to Stay Hydrated During Summer Travel
August is vacation month and Dr. Murad has provided a list of travel “do’s” and don’ts” to ensure your skin stays hydrated longer and looking its best, especially during this busy travel season.
When traveling by plane:
And while the peanuts and pretzels may look delicious, salt can cause swelling. Instead, eat your water while in flight to stay hydrated. Snack on raw fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples which are filled with water and cell strengthening nutrients. This step will allow the body to retain water longer by providing maximum hydration on the cellular level.
When traveling by car:
Road trips may feel like the most comfortable way to travel with friends and family, but they can leave the skin a bit dry due to sun exposure and excessive heat or air conditioning.
When embarking on a road trip, remember to apply sunscreen even if it isn’t sunny outside. Harmful rays can penetrate through clouds and car windows, adding up to potential sun damage overtime. Murad’s Essential C Day Moisture SPF 30
provides essential hydration for dry skin on the face, neck and décolletage, as well as infusing skin with antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and hydrators to help protect against free radical damage. For the arms and the rest of the body, Murad’s Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30
offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection to prevent sun and free radical damage.
Before heading out and while on the road, try not to drink too much coffee, as caffeine is a major cause of dehydration. Instead, make your own refreshing smoothie (I’d be happy to send some of Dr. Murad’s recipes) before leaving your house and store it in a thermos to enjoy on the road later.
While out to sea:
Cruising to exotic locations or near home can be luxurious. However, it can also zap the moisture out of the complexion due to exposure to salt water and ocean breezes. Maintaining a proper skincare regimen while on vacation is important to keep the skin healthy and nourished. Wash away dirt and impurities each night and revitalize tired skin with Murad’s Resurgence Renewing Cleansing Cream.
Make sure to follow it up with a moisturizer with SPF, such as Perfecting Day Cream SPF 30,
every day for lightweight hydration that stimulates the skin.
