Wardrobe Must Haves

It's spring! And spring is all about love. As I reflect on what love is to me, I think of something lasting, something that makes me feel good, and something that is a staple in my life. Naturally I’m talking about my wardrobe. Not the frivolous seasonal items, but the true, long lasting pieces that make my wardrobe the true happiness that it is. Because I feel love should be shared, and I’m a little bit bossy, I’ve outlined my favorite Wardrobe Must Haves!

Fitted Blazer: The fitted blazer is the item that pulls any look together. It adds panache to jeans and a T-shirt, it gets you big-presentation-at-work ready in an instant, and it is great thrown over a dress. Personally, I try and keep at least two different blazers around at all times. The blazer is key because of the way it fits. Depending on your body type you’ll be looking for a one to three button, wide to narrow lapels, and patch or slit pockets. Any time I pass a blazer in a store, I try it on. You never know when you will find the perfect blazer. I view the time trying on every blazer as an investment in my future.

Jeans: You need jeans. I would recommend at least two different styles. One slim fit and one either trouser or bootcut. If you are serious about this, hem your trouser or bootcut style to work well with flats, and keep your slim fit long to wear with heels, or you can roll them past the ankle to wear with flats, which is a super cute spring and summer look. Look for even washes. Any distressing means you probably can’t wear them to work, and they won’t be in fashion for the long haul. These are investment pieces! Play it safe with a medium to dark indigo wash.

Button-down: Wear with your jeans, pencil skirt, trousers, or over your dress! A classic white button-down is always a winner, but I have a hard time keeping them around. I tend to… uhmm… a little bit…ruin them fairly quickly. Instead, I get a colored button-down. Find a color that looks great on you. Find a color that will blend in with your wardrobe. I have found that my maroon button-down works with nearly everything I own. This season prints are in, so maybe you should try a top with a little floral motif. Delightful!

Sweater: Like most things, you need two sweaters. One crewneck and one cardigan. You can wear both sweaters with all of your other items in your closet, and they make great layering pieces. I currently adore my charcoal cardi and my orange crew neck. I wear it over my maroon button-down. Did someone say colorblocking? Your sweaters can be thin, bulky, cable knit, cashmere, wool, whatevs. Choose the one that fits your style and weather.
Trousers: These will be your workhorse work wear, so choose wisely. I say a solid black, straight leg pant is the way to go. Light to medium weight wool. Wear with your sweaters, button-down, or blazer. Bam! Dressed for work.

Shoes: A solid wardrobe base has at least one pair each of heels, boots, and flats. Every single item on this list can be worn with any of those shoe types, effectively expanding your wardrobe with only a few things! While I am a huge fan of the trendy, cute, and daring, if you are only going to own a few shoes, they need to be able to work at work, so make your purchases in black, grey, or snake print, and keep everything close-toed and demure. Although, I think flats can pull off having a little more fun.

T-shirts: There is a good chance you have been collecting these all your life. I know I have. The tee is a great staple. Make sure your tees are clean, in good repair, and fit properly. Tees are so easy to come by, that we really have no excuse for a sloppy looking tee. Or a tee with some type of embarrassing message like, “Your boyfriend thinks I’m hott.” Seriously, find some self-respect and throw those out. Pair your cooler tees under a cardi or blazer, and wear with jeans or even trousers. The simple tee always appreciates some costume jewelry to punch it up a bit. Go to your closet and mix and match tees and jewelry, and you will find you suddenly doubled your wardrobe!
Dress: I believe in dresses. There is a silhouette for every body type. The dress is the place to invest. Look for quality construction and extras like a lined skirt. Knee length (or thereabouts) is best, as it can take you to work, but also be sexy enough for a night out. Work it up or down with jewelry, scarves, or your blazer, and change the look with any one of your three pairs of shoes.

Pencil Skirt: I love separates. The pencil skirt, in my humble opinion, is the best separate there is! I’m longing for one in a rich charcoal grey. You can pair it with everything, and it adds such versatility to your wardrobe. I particularly long to wear one with a colorblocked heel, tie-neck blouse, and ladylike bag. Sigh. I would look so great in that outfit.

Trench: I am certain that the most elegant of ladies wear trenches. The trench will never go out of style, keeps you warm, goes with everything, and lends an air of mystery and refinement to any outfit. Trenches come with various bells and whistles, so find a trench that suits you. Single breasted? Epaulettes?  Three quarter length sleeve? It’s all out there for your choosing!

Accessories: I can only assume you have started your accessory collection. I hope you have necklaces in various lengths, bracelets, rings, and earrings. Scarves and belts are also easy ways to change up the wardrobe. I tend to place sentimental value on some of my nicer pieces, and I hope you do too! It makes the jewelry more fun to wear, and it means you will wear it more often. Why have something in your closet (or jewelry box) if you never wear it? As I keep trying to explain to my dear mother, “If you don’t love it, you won’t wear it, so don’t buy it.”

Thankfully, my heart has a great capacity to love.

Happy Shopping!

Gorgeous Spring Bags from Kooba!

From vibrant pops of color to polished rose gold hardware, Kooba’s Spring 2012 Collection maintains its key design elements while adding a refreshing look on classic silhouettes. Transitioning to warmer weather, the 90’s minimalism continues to influence the shape of the silhouettes as the color spectrum swings to the left. Mint, peach and cement all compliment the brand’s first use of rose gold hardware.  To brighten up the scene, pops of coral and lime green accents pair well with textured color blocking. The key inspirations behind the Collection –  French artist Sonia Delaunay's Color movement and 80’s movies– mesh flawlessly together, creating a unique style for every woman this season!
