Fall Denim Guide
According to my many social media outlets, half of the country is experiencing uncomfortable rains and snows, while the rest is bathed in warm sunlight. I am currently bathing in the aforementioned sunlight. How did I get so lucky?!I have only been in Chicago for a few weeks, but the weather is wonderful, and the people are friendly! As you know, I meticulously packed my bags for this trip, and I must say I look classy. However, I only brought a few pairs of jeans. This was a huge oversight. I love jeans! I was taking inventory and I simply don’t have enough.
I’m so busy, and I’m sure you are too, that I find myself coming home from work and instantly slip into my pajamas. By the time I drag myself home from the office (turns out this special project is a lot of work!) I am mostly ready to just climb into bed with nary a thought as to taking off my makeup. (Don’t tell Girly, she would be scandalized!) Naturally, this only causes more problems in the morning as I rush to remove my raccoon eyes, grab some breakfast, and head out the door.
Anyhoo, for efficiency and easy reference for you busy gals, I’ve compiled a list of jean styles and great outfit ideas. Knowledge is power! This is the type of continuing education that I happen to love: You can read this handy list on your smartphone as you commute to work. Brill! (If I do say so myself!)
Flare: I have been loving the flares I brought with me. I wear them with my tie-neck blouse, platforms, and satchel. When I’m feeling a bit more casual, I throw on cute sneakers and a V-neck sweater. If you still haven’t welcomed the flare jean into your wardrobe, remember that proportion is key. Make sure your flare doesn’t consume your whole foot. You should still look like you have feet. And you are probably wearing cute shoes! Let them poke out and offer a bit of intrigue to passers by.
Boot Cut: While not the hottest trend right now, your boot cuts will still do the trick this season. They are a great way to embrace the flare trend, and boot cut jeans really flatter some figures. And, Hello, the boot cut is perfect for fall because it is boot season! Wear these jeans with your worn-in boots, soft cardigan, and silver jewelry.
Trouser/Wide Leg: Take your jeans to work! The trouser jean is cut to mimic the classic 9-5 staple, and make sure you choose one in a dark even wash, with polished details and a flat front. Wear with a button-down or thin sweater and blazer. If you tuck in your blouses, don’t forget a skinny belt in embossed or patent leather.
Boyfriend: The concept of the boyfriend jean, as you know, is to make it appear as if we had nothing else to wear, and just grabbed the nearest pair of jeans from our boyfriend’s closet. We slipped them on, and naturally they were a bit baggy on us, so they sit on the hip, and look at the length! Too long! Must cuff! The best boyfriend jeans come in faded washes with distressed details(our boyfriends are all so cool!), so this is a very casual look. We are ladies, so counteract the masculine jean with feminine details. Sweet ballet flats, bright pumps, or strappy wedges should do the trick. Pair with a casual-yet feminine top and accessories.
Skinny: Skinnies are changing! Well, they are still skinny, but they have been around long enough to expand to multiple colors and lengths. You no longer need to settle for a mid-wash jean. The whole blue spectrum is at your fingertips, as is the whole rainbow! Feeling bold? Try a red skinny jean! Wear it with a copper top and rockin’ heels, and you will be the best dressed twirty-girl at cocktail hour. Skinnies originally came in a long length to get that scrunched down look. I like to pair those with strappy sandals and a long top for an easy casual look. But some designers are starting to shorten their skinnies. I LOVE an ankle length skinny with a cute boat shoe, basic cable knit sweater, and striped scarf. It sends my heart aflutter!
Cropped: Remember when jeans came in only one hem length? And then floods came along and everyone had a heart attack? Well, this season it is all about varied hem lengths! Personally, I love it! It gives me many more options in my closet, and I dearly love options. The best cropped jeans hit at mid-calf. Cropped jeans play well with platform wedges, and look stunning with a statement blazer over a basic tee. If you are wearing flats, try a layered look with a boat neck sweater over a basic tank in a rich color.
Jeggings: Okay, I admit it: I wasn’t a huge jegging fan at first. I scoffed! I rolled my eyes! I mocked! I would see them for sale and I would make fun of them. It was borderline rude! But, like a true fashion maven, I have changed my mind. I think the jegging is pure brilliance! The look of jeans in an undeniably comfortable fabric? I’m in! Wear your jeggings with boots (you won’t have to deal with denim scrunching) or platforms or heels to elongate your legs. The jegging looks great with an oversized tee, tunic, or blouse. Mix and match skinny belts, blazers, or necklaces to complete your look. Seeing how I’ve given you a pep talk, you may want to run right out and buy yourself a pair! Don’t just purchase anything labeled “jegging”. Lower-end jeggings are really leggings that look silly. You want the real deal from a real professional. Trust me. You and your butt will thank me.
Phew! I can see jean happiness in my future! Celebrate your right to wear denim by wearing a different style every day of the week!
P.S. I just discovered Sole Society and I am hooked! Amazing shoes chosen especially for you and your own personal style! Check it out - you're gonna love it!
