Fall Wardrobe Basics

With the change in seasons comes a dizzying array of colors, styles, and price points, each with a unique look and an angle on the fall scene; names known throughout the land; an assortment enough to boggle the mind of the savviest fashion devotee. No, I’m not talking about designer collections of couture, ready-to-wear, or accessories; I mean the September Issues. Vogue. Elle. W. Bazaar. And if perusing the different designers’ items on the thousands of pages wasn’t daunting enough, each editorial staff spins its own approach to the F/W fashionscape. By the time you finish reading, your options seem as limitless as the colors in a Lacroix runway eye shadow treatment.

Never fear, my little chickadees. I’m here to net it out for you. By the time you finish reading my column, you’ll at least have a foundation upon which to build your own take on the season’s freshest looks – a primer, if you will, of fall fantasticness; a safety net into which you can fling yourself, if need be, while hunting for the grace notes and arabesques of your own unique style.

Blazer: A key part of the hot menswear trend, the blazer can also be a nipped-waist topper for a slim or soft feminine skirt for work or parties, or a long, sharp-shouldered double-breasted jacket with slim trousers or equestrian leggings and ankle boots for urban sleek chic. Spend wisely, as a cheap blazer is more likely to look it than an easier-to-tailor item like a sweater or a blouse.
Shop at Boden!

Black: It’s back. Head-to-toe or just to set off a statement piece like a dynamite print skirt or a floral dress, it’s no longer the last refuge of the sartorially uninspired. Black pumps ground a colorful layering of blouse, scarf, and cardi; black pants smooth your leg line and let your textured jacket shine. And who can deny the lengthening possibilities of a sharp suit with an opaque tight and suede pump?

Skinny Pants: For better or for worse, this is the shape this fall. As I’ve mentioned in the past, however, you have to find the cut that works for your figure, or you’re sunk. If you’re heavier in your hip, thigh and bottom, grab a straight-leg silhouette, with a little width in the ankle instead of a skin-tight fit. You can unzip the ankle zips for some extra volume. Or always top your jeggings with a minidress, tunic sweater, or long blouse layer that covers the hip, then add height with a wedge or platform.

Knits: Killer sweaters are everywhere, the chunkier the better. Layer over a moody fall floral dress, or top those skinny cargos, slouchy tee and ballet flats. Add a chunky scarf as an easily removable layer for those days that start cool and finish warm.

High/Low: IMHO, the best way to distinguish yourself as one of the fashion cognoscenti this fall is to rock the mixing of high/low like a pro. My pick: the sharp suit from a few paragraphs back with great pumps, a statement necklace, and a faded chambray work shirt in a slim cut. Try your slinkiest, chiffoniest little cocktail dress topped with a cotton canvas military jacket or a hooded anorak. Or sleek little Audrey pants with a menswear vest, a plaid boyfriend shirt and distressed lace-up ankle boots. Cargo pants, a snazzy blazer, and metallic pumps to a cocktail party. The counterpoint is delicious.

Leopard Something: Animal prints are always around, but F/W10 is seeing a renaissance. Think ‘60s capris, or an ‘80s sheath dress. If you’re animal-shy in large doses, spice up a simpler outfit with a print bag, hot flats, or a belt around a jacket or cardigan.

Lace Something: Along with the femme fiesta comes the undeniable sexiness of lace. As a clever hint of print on a tee, an accent of trim on a jacket or skirt, or a knock-em-dead dress, this is a devastating way to spice up more casual elements like rolled khakis or a leather moto jacket.

Short Boots: Wear with everything. Anything. Now with rolled pants, shorts, or short dresses; later with, well, all the same stuff with tights.

Tights/Socks: If you’re classic, stick with the tights. Textures, sweatery ribs, or patterns; anything goes. (But the wilder the hose, the simpler the clothes, please.) If you’re daring, try socks. Slouchy with bare legs above, with boots, pumps or sandals. (Remember, though, the more segments you divide your legs into, the shorter they look.) The truly adventurous will try a minidress with evening sandals and slouchy sheer ankle socks (but not I).

Canvas Military Jacket: So hot. Waxed, short, or distressed and longer, this is SO HOT it’s hard for me to find words. THE way to funk up your workwear, or to urbanize a floral dress, leather belt and clogs. Daytime with jeans, sneaks and a striped tee; nighttime with shiny pants, an embellished top and haute sandals.

So put down the mags, take a deep breath, and relax. You don’t have to buy EVERY fabulous new thing, nor decide on your trend direction for F/W, before sandal weather is over. Start with a few reliable hits to mix in with your transition pieces, and layer up with fall’s delicious new looks as the season progresses. Easier on your planning skills and your budget, and you’ll still look fantastic. Which is really the point, isn’t it?

Founded in 2007, desperate for a pair of super-slimming blue jeans, founder Catherine Hart decided to do something about it! So she started SkinnyJeans® and tackled every possible way to make blue jeans more slimming and flattering.

From the material SkinnyJeans® is made from (classic denim with a high nylon/elastane content), to the fading and shading pattern on the jeans, hello! Skinny Jeans are crafted to be thigh-slimming, stomach-flattening, buttocks-shaping, leg-lengthening, stretch blue jeans. Additional slimming features include, strategically placed inseams, a flattering ‘barely bootcut’ silhouette, a restraining panel in front that holds your stomach in, the size and shape of the back pockets, and customizable lengths.

I just got this great pair of white jeans from hello! Skinny Jeans and I absolutely adore them! They are by far the most flattering pair of white jeans I have ever owned. Very slimming, very comfortable and extremely flattering. So that old never-wear-white-after-Labor-Day adage is going right out the window — I plan on rocking these skinnies all through the fall!
