Style Scoop: The Look for Spring
One of the hardest things about curating my wardrobe is that on any given day I could have a completely different look in mind than on any other day. Depending on my mood, the weather, my agenda for the day, and what the scale says that morning, I could choose from one of any number of styles. I guess it’s one of the perks of being a woman: we have more options to choose from than just shirt-pants-belt-shoes, like the boys do. (I’ve never understood how fashion-junkie men can be satisfied with just varying combinations of dress shirts, ties, pocket squares and suit fabrics. Borrrr-ing!) But this Sybil-esque variety of personae makes updating the various versions of “me” all the more difficult, come seasonal-transition time.
Spring/Summer 2010 certainly offers a wealth of choices, though. With my superior style savvy and my uncanny ability to scout out hip combinations, I should be able to satisfy any sartorial itch for the new season. Witness:
Preppy Me: For a classic day look, usually worn to events that will include family members (some of whom simply can’t relate to haute couture), I’ll be found in a short blazer, rolled-leg chinos and a Breton tee or a soft white v-neck. Homage will be paid to my more stylish side, however, with a studded belt, a statement necklace, and big sandals.
Businesslike Me: Professional reliability is exemplified by a sleek knit dress in an graphic floral, with pale pumps to lengthen my legs. The ubiquitous laptop and other schleppage will be tucked away in a respectable and sturdy (yet stylish) leather tote, or maybe one with some canvas.
Frivolous Me: This is the side that comes out for a Girls’ Night or a fun Sunday brunch. I’ll probably wear a short, full skirt with a snug tee, a denim jacket, a wide brown belt and wedge sandals; or maybe cropped cargos with a soft, drapey tank, a loose cardigan, a funky long necklace or two, and my new favorite gladiators. Maybe one of the hot dresses-that-look-like-separates, with the ruffly skirt. Or even a silky floral dress with a blazer and senseless heeled booties. (Love.)
Adorable Me: Picture her in wide-leg sailor pants with big bold espadrilles, an embellished tee and a darling jacket, accompanied by a delicious, spring-bright leather hobo and a little straw fedora. I’m still working on an event for this look; possibly a shopping day with the BFF, or a weekend day-date (no, he doesn’t know it yet).
Glamorous Me: I love the look of a pencil skirt and platform pumps; topped with a sharp blazer or a soft silk blouse, this look rules fancy lunches and daytime meetings. Or for evening, some sparkle over the same skirt or a cropped, polished slim ankle trouser, with a metallic sandal, a rack of stacked bangles and a graphic clutch strike just the right note of sophistication. (I’m envisioning my entrance to the high school reunion cocktail party.) Or the easiest: drapey silk cocktail dress. Heels. Chandeliers.
Downtown Me: For a night out at the newest boîte, I’ll be rocking a pair of faded skinnies, possibly rolled up (I know, who would have thought those pleat-and-roll skills would come in handy again, right?), with a slinky printed tee and my standby leather moto jacket. Platforms are a foregone conclusion, with a big cuff and layered chains. (My mom does not understand this outfit.)
Weekend Me: Although occasionally my weekend look consists of yoga pants, a huge sweater and woolly socks (yes, even in spring), when I try harder (read: after a good night’s sleep) my look is more like rolled-up shredded boyfriend jeans, a close-fitting polo, a crinkly scarf, a skinny metallic belt, and minimal flops or the return of the flat espadrille. Alternately, the white skinnies (when the dog is not around) get topped with a great boho blouse or tunic, and grounded with ballet flats. Comfy doesn’t have to mean schlumpy.
While some might find dressing the different people my life can create daunting, I look on it as a challenge: of space, budget, and creativity. Plus, it allows me to sample each of this spring’s delicious trends with inescapable logic. Who will you be today?
