Stylescoop: Now & Later

I’m positively giddy about spring. It’s been over 50 here for the past two days, and that’s beyond unusual for frosty New England, where it doesn’t get this nice until mid-April. So between that and the latest InStyle that I just finished, I’m feeling the need to branch out of my cold-weather wrap-ups and launch into spring duds.

But experience has taught me that Mother Nature giveth, and Mother Nature taketh away. As likely as not, we’ll have another blizzard and some weeks of heinous cold rain before we get to pack up the down and cashmere for good. And the one thing that irks me more than all the waffling back and forth is being cold while I wait. Thus begins the annual blend: spring fashions that layer up or down so you don’t freeze.

Spring Trend for Now: Neutrals. Layer a tank with soft details under a pale cardigan and a tan safari jacket, and add a crisp, slim grey cotton trouser. Slip on a suede ankle bootie, a gauzy scarf and a slim metallic belt.
For Later: Trade the cardigan/jacket combo for a light linen blazer. Swap the scarf for a layered bead necklace, and the bootie for a menswear oxford. Expose a little more ankle by rolling the cuff of the trousers. The masculine profiles of these pieces are offset by the delicate colors and soft fabrics.

Spring Trend for Now: Modern Florals. Top a short, full skirt in a bright garden print with a crisp white blouse and a sharp, slim leather jacket. Or slip a turtleneck under a silk dress for work. Monochromatic tights and pumps or shooties keep you warm but fashion-forward. Grab a textured clutch and intricate earrings and you’re off.
For Later: The skirt can do casual duty with a simple fitted tee and flat sandals, or get more dressed up (think bridal/baby shower or family brunch) with a bright wedge heel and a belt to cinch that safari jacket. Spend an evening in slim crops with sunshine-bright blouse and a killer platform. Leather at

Spring Trend for Now: Nautical. (How many years have we talked about this one? I’m buying high-end this time. This look will never go out.) There’s a fine line to walk here: you don’t want to look like you just docked your yacht. A double-breasted jacket works well with a wide-leg chino, or a striped trouser with a solid sweater. Navy and white are a classic combo that serves all complexions and seasons, but will rock the spring, early or late, with a pop of bright persimmon, yellow, or cobalt blue. The eternal striped fisherman top looks super with jeans and boots.
For Later: Ground the striped top with a soft skirt and flops. Layer white jeans with bright-colored espadrilles and a gathered cotton jacket. Top a classic dress with a bright cardigan. A canvas tote will hint at the theme without getting too twee.

Spring Trend for Now: Soft silhouettes. Wear a loose, tapered (wow, I never thought I’d advise that again) paper-bag trouser (for those ladies with slim waists) and a cropped jacket with a neat ballet flat or sleek brogue. Slip a close-fitting long-sleeved tee with texture under a loose a-line dress (for those ladies without large busts), with tights and wedges. Curvy girls need to be careful with these looks, and add structure to help contain and define your hourglass shape; for softness wear a neckline ruffle, a floaty skirt hemline, or a floral detail on a shoe.
For Later: Endless possibilities! A soft silk dress with killer heels and bare legs. A loose tank and a belted, pleated short with suede gladiators. A cotton boyfriend chino and roll-sleeve safari shirt in breezy linen. Luxurious lightweight cashmere cardigan over an empire-waist maxi-dress.

There are some things you can count on at this time of year: mud, a classic trench, the Oscars. The climate, not so much. But with a few of this season’s latest looks, and your winter classics pinch-hitting in case of a climatic emergency, you can rock the spring finery without further ado. Bring on the lambs!

While most of the A-Listers at this year’s Oscars ceremony embraced barely-there make-up looks, Best Actress Award-winner Sandra Bullock went for true movie star glamour with dewy skin, soft eyes and show-stopping classic red lips.

“This timeless look can’t be beaten for special occasions when you want to look groomed and polished – you’ll feel like a million dollars, even without an Oscars trophy in your hand!” says renowned make-up artist Jemma Kidd. Here Jemma gives you her step-by-step guide to red-carpet ready red lips

  1. Prepare lips with a lip primer to tone down any redness and ensure the line of the lips will be sharp and defined.
  2. Spend time drawing the perfect symmetrical outline with a waxy red lip liner pencil. Start at the V of the Cupid’s bow and take the liner right into the corners.
  3. Fill in the lip with the pencil to hold the lipstick in place and make it last longer.
  4. Paint on the lipstick using a lip brush for precision, starting in one corner and working inwards. Use the tip of the brush for the edges and the flat of the brush for larger areas. Blot with a tissue and apply another coat.
  5. Add a dab of gloss at the centre of the lower lip and press your lips together to give an illusion of fullness.

Try Jemma Kidd Make Up School Ultimate Lipstick Duo in Sophia ($19.00) and Lip Line Duo in Red ($19.00) for classic red lips that exude grown-up Hollywood glamour.
