Winter Wardrobe Guide
Cold weather is the undeniable impetus we all need to put the finishing touches on our winter wardrobes. After all, how depressing is it to wake up one morning to frost on the windshield, only to discover that you haven’t yet bought that perfect pair of boots or that divine little coat and you have to walk to the office shivering? Yet the breadth of the seasonal selection can be paralyzing, and no one wants to make a snap decision and end up wearing something just this side of perfect. So you wait. And dither. And budget. And this year, it may be even harder than ever to talk yourself into new purchases. (Well, for some of us not so hard, but still.)
It’s amazing how fashion this year has mirrored the economy. Where last year we were just getting a picture of the fiscal fiasco that was descending, the look was all about bright colors mixed with black, luxurious details and It Bags. For Winter 09/10 the sartorial scene is definitely more subdued. Blacks and greys dominate (I am hard-pressed to find cashmere anywhere but here in color of any kind), silhouettes are more covered up (turtlenecks, poufy skirts and opaque tights), and even the most stylish girls are ditching their glitzy, bling-ed-up super-totes for simpler, subtler suede carryalls. Why, just last week I found myself deciding NOT to hit a designer sale rack because I didn’t see anything I needed! ME!
But fear not, fashionisti, I’ll help you navigate this shopping shutdown by leaning heavily on the classics while picking up a few key hot trends to spice up your look. With some well-thought-out planning and the right attitude, you can keep your adoring public happy while keeping your certified public accountant happy, too.
Start with: Black blazer and a crisp white shirt.
Add: For work, wide-leg menswear trousers from last season, a bold belt OVER the blazer, and an oxford pump. For play: A funky big necklace to an open-wide neckline, an untucked shirt over skinny jeans (pick your favorite shade; the wilder the wash, the more rock-n-roll the feel), and a sh’bootie in a great color or black if you’re feeling more traditional. Grab your favorite satchel and you’re off. (Or, add a trouser jean and a ballet flat for a casual Friday at the office.) For evening: ditch the white shirt for a funky tee or a silky, lacy shell and a miniskirt with dark tights and platforms or flat boots (see, high-heeled tall boots with a miniskirt have Pretty Woman implications I don’t want you to expose yourself to). Switch to a sparkly clutch.
Start with: Soft sweater dress.
Add: For day, a luxe cocoon cardi and sleek flat boots. Sling a double-wrap belt around your hips. For night: a beaded-fabric collar and suede platform booties make this dress cocktail-worthy.
Start with: Black leggings.
Add: For day, a big plaid shirt, distressed belt, and ballet flats. Top with a fuzzy vest and a big hobo. For evening: a long boyfriend blazer and a sparkly minidress over strappy platforms. (Or if you’re feeling funky, try a bright-colored jewel-tone pair of leggings.)
Start with: Floral dress.
Add: For day, dark opaque tights and a thick-strapped sandal, topped with a cropped leather bomber jacket. The contrast of tough and sweet is so current. For work: a short cardigan sweater and a heeled boot. For weekend: a denim legging and a sneaker.
Start with: Cashmere turtleneck sweater.
Add: For work, a patterned, short full skirt and dark tights with tonal ballet flats or pumps. For play: a slim or straight-leg jean, slouchy boots and an infinity scarf. Top with a puffy anorak and you’re ready for a frosty day.
Start with: Tweed coat.
Add: For work, a wide belt to cinch the waist, a long suede glove and a stack-heeled boot. Make sure your tote is sleek and businesslike. For play: a bright neon scarf, fun menswear hat and wide-leg jeans. A jewel-toned handbag adds even more spice.
So let’s review: pick up some opaque tights in earthy colors, belts skinny and wide, a couple of funky burnout tees, some sparkle for evening, one or two new toppers and some great jewelry. Then it will be easy to maximize your look with a few well-placed of-the-moment accents, while minimizing the impact on your bank account. After all, the holiday season is right around the corner, and we girls must look our best when the sparkle hits the spangles, yes? Besides, conspicuous consumerism is soooo 2007.
