These blessed twelve weeks of summer, whether you count them from Memorial Day to Labor Day or from one scholastic year to the next, fly by so fast every year it’s amazing to me how many memories we are able to pack in. Sometimes I feel like I spend my whole year waiting for summer to arrive, and when it’s gone I can’t believe it. I had so many more things on my summer to-do list! I was going whale watching! Going to host a backyard campout and barbeque! Going to re-read the classics! Going to a triple-A ball game with work buddies! Going to hit every free concert in the park! And I ran out of weekends, again. But I have the perfect outfits for all of it, even if they only get worn in my head. What, you don’t believe me? I have all the essentials:
Cute tops: To mix and match with shorts, skirt-and-a-blazer for work, or loose linen pants for weekends, I have all the trends covered: crayon brights, ethnic prints, and embellished neutrals. Short-sleeved or full-sleeved or no-sleeved, I have the right piece for the right occasion.
Darling full skirts: Whether for casual outings (picnic) with flats or dressier with a cute strappy heeland a slinky tank (evening shindig), this hot silhouette was definitely represented in my closet. Add that cute straw tote and this would work for a weekend brunch/flea marketing expedition, too. (Not going to let that event slip off my calendar this year.)
Shorts for all occasions: Long lean Bermudas for the summer work outing, or with a blazer on days without client meetings; cuffed shorts to balance that adorable a-line floaty top; the hottest denim cut-offs (who’d ‘a thunk we’d be back to these again?) with a detailed tank and gladiators for the baseball game. And that cute sporty nylon jacket looks perfect with all three ensembles.
Dresses: A great sundress that I can make fancy with metallic's or casual with bright patent flats; a dynamite little strapless number that will take me from a meeting, with a cardigan and a belt, to a wedding reception, with great beads, skyscrapers and a clutch; and a sleek maxi that works for après-sun or a chic cocktail party.
Cardigans: Although I’m having a little trouble deciding between pales and brights as my go-to color scheme this summer, I can safely say that one patterned sweater in a delicate cotton and one longer v-neck in a diaphanous lightweight cashmere (oh, how I love that this is now a year-round fabric!) will solve most of my air-conditioning wardrobe woes. They will top nearly all of my outfits with a cuddly yet fashionable “third piece” that takes a regular look into the haut monde stratosphere. Well, that and a dynamite belt.
The Right Pants: There are so many options here, they’re almost all essential! And a definite essential in my summer wardrobe is a gorgeous pair of jeans from Little in the Middle. Just like the name says, these jeans are cut for girls who have small waists and they fit like perfection. I also scooped up a straight-leg classic for work (days when the boss isn’t “working” from home), a slouchy wide-leg linen for relaxing (I’m envisioning a frosty beverage at sunset on an oceanfront deck somewhere, but that invitation is still outstanding), and a slim white jean
for nearly everything else. Okay, and a boyfriend jean for when I’m feeling very hip. (Sorry, bad pun.)
Killer shoes: You all know I’m a proponent of the-shoe-makes-the-outfit, but this summer’s trends might be the strongest support this theory ever got. It would be possible, in a pinch, to wear a simple outfit every day (say, a pale slouchy tank and soft navy silk shorts) and change the footwear for different occasions. A straw espadrille in a bright color or a wooden-heel wedge platform work for girly outings (on solid footing) like lunch out or a gallery stroll. A great flat sandal in gladiator metallic or textured leather goes more casual for a house party, concert in the park or a beach picnic. Or a sweet studded high heel with a little aggression (how can I count the ways I’m obsessed with Pour La Victoire?) takes the look downtown for a night out at the chic eatery, a cocktail do or a bass-throbbing club. And the next morning the boyfriend-style sneaker will carry you through your three-egg recovery in comfort.
Hot accessories: I'm definitely going to snap up a couple of these gorgeous WAM Bands — this summer's hot fashion accessory. These eye-catching bracelets are handcrafted and made from polished resin. Very Greek goddess. And if you're looking for something with glitz and glamour, check out the amazing jewelry at Tous.com. My personal fave is the Sucre Collection — elegant with a bit of an edge.
See, I told you I’m all ready! Bring on the crazy schedule! Even if I don’t manage to check every box off my to-do list this summer, I’ll look fabulous while I’m not doing it. After all, there’s always next year, right?
