It’s been so nice here for the past few days I’ve almost forgotten that we got 10 inches of snow last week. And though I know the rodent saw his shadow, and the capricious winds of March will blow frosty down the back of my neck again before winter lets go for good, it’s time to seriously start my planning. No, not vacation (thanks so much to the financial titans for destroying any hope of a tropical sojourn for 2009!) – my plan of attack for the conquest of this spring’s hot trends. While it’s true I’ll need to be a bit more, shall we say, judicious in my fund allocation this time around, if I play my (debit) cards right I should be able to load up on the key pieces and hit all the sartorial high notes once the trees have leaves and my peep-toes won’t incite frostbite. Want to play? Grab a note pad and follow along!
Pastels: Gone are the brights of last year; this season’s colors are soft and sweet. The new neutral is a delicate dove grey, which works beautifully with pale pink, butter yellow, and the scorching hot seafoam green. (Didja see that Oscars red carpet spread?) These colors positively scream spring, and will be delightfully cool all summer long.
Silky and Slouchy: To the delight of many a girl, the ubiquity of super-skinny pants is on the wane. This spring, grab one of the many options for a loose, comfortable trouser: boyfriend khakis, soft silk habotai suit pants, loose wide-leg sailor pants. These work well with a simple cap-sleeved tee or one of the deconstructed blazers seen everywhere.
Menswear: The evolution of last fall’s grandpa cardigan, the topper du jour is the soft blazer. It falls to the low hip and goes perfectly over jeans, miniskirts, and cocktail dresses alike. One in a silk crêpe de Chine and one in cotton twill will carry you a long way this spring. My favorite look is a soft tank over pleated silk shorts with an open jacket and flat snakeskin sandals or a pair of platforms; I’m already planning my social schedule so I can wear this a thousand times (with different people, of course).
Floral: Big, floaty organza florals are everywhere. Adapt them for daytime with a soft chiffon peasant blouse over jeans or cropped white pants, or go for the whole garden in a delicate dress with a sweet belt and a cardigan. Keep the look from going overly sweet with a hobo bag and a platform shoe. Rock a minidress for a night out with a studded sandal and a cropped leather jacket.
Texture: Wrinkled, crinkled, ruffled, pleated, crisp and papery or silky and soft, texture is so important this spring. There are also endless prints in stripes, florals, or bold ethnic ikats and block prints to pique your fancy. Even the accessories are loaded with texture: handbags have pleating, quilting, studs or stitching details, and shoes, high or flat, are suede, snakeskin, shimmering metallic or sparkling with stones. Just remember to keep your clothes in a simple color palette with bold accessories, or put the focus on your super-bright print with simple shoes and makeup.
Cinched: Start with a classic trench-with-a-twist: haute or just hot. Dresses have a focus on the waist, whether short or long. If you’re not confident that your waist needs
highlighting, try an empire waistband: it enhances the bust, nips the midsection, floats over belly and hips (not that any of us have those) and makes your legs look a mile long. What’s not to love?
Sporty: With dresses this casual-chic and comfortable, who needs pants and tees? Add a ballet flat for now, and top it with a nylon jacket or a soft cardigan. When the sun comes out in earnest, switch to a t-strap sandal with clean details and grab a soft hobo for your gear.
So, I know you’re just as sad as I am that we have to wait a little longer for the bare-legs weather to start (we’re getting MORE SNOW tomorrow), but with a plan like ours we can at least focus on how sweeeet we’ll look when we finally get there. Keep your chins up, chickens, it’ll be here before you can say “snakeskin gladiator”!
