Spring Transition/Now & Later
It’s actually warm outside today, melting and muddy, and I’m feeling the inevitable tug toward bare knees and open toes. Of course, it’s going to be 20º again tomorrow, and I’m pretty sure that furry rodent saw his shadow last week, so I’m probably jumping the gun just a little bit. Here’s a glimpse of the discussion I have with myself every morning when I’m trying to get dressed: “But I’m so TIRED of all my winter clothes!” I whine. “Yes, but ‘frostbitten’ is not an attractive skin color,” I remind myself, “and those knees need all the advantages they can get.” So, I shop for spring, I look at photos of spring, I dream of spring (or possibly a whirlwind tropical getaway), but I live winter. There are, occasionally, ways to bridge the gap – with a little creativity and plenty of layering, and armed with advice galore from yours truly, you can slip into your spring finery a few weeks early.
Winter day: A little sport-inspired shirtdress will look darling over a slim-knit merino turtleneck sweater, opaque tights, and little ankle booties; add some big beads and a leather satchel to hold workday essentials.
Thaw day: Trade the turtleneck for a breezy loose scarf, and give your toes some fresh air in a pair of peep-toe pumps. It’s still a little early for the spring bright colors in footwear, but a hot spicy red or a warm luggage tan would be perfect. Grab a textured clutch and you’re off.
Winter day: That soft crêpe de Chine tank is way too light to go solo this early in the season; add one of spring’s long, loose blazers to keep warm. Ground this floaty style with slim grey pants and a flat boot for casual, or a platform pump for a little dressier occasion.
Thaw day: Your tank will look great over a pencil skirt; keep the blazer nearby for breezes, or layer a slim, long-sleeved tee underneath. Those platform pumps will work nicely with the skirt, too, or if it’s really balmy you could rock a strappy heeled sandal.
Winter day: Your wide-leg, mid-rise jeans have held you in all winter long; top them with a slim shirt, a belt and a nipped-waist jacket to accentuate your waist, and highlight how long your legs look by finishing with a wedge or platform loafer.
Thaw day: Trade the jacket for a soft, feminine floral blouse, and the loafer for a peep-toe or wooden-soled sandal. Add a bright strand of beads and a bold cuff bracelet for a hint of the spring-bright colors to come.
Winter day: That saturated-color miniskirt will look bold over deep-hued tights and a pair of patent ballet flats; top with a structured military jacket or a slim-knit turtleneck and either a great pair of hoops or a chunky necklace; this look has to be minimal.
Thaw day: Top the mini with a scoop-neck tee and a long cardigan sweater (but watch your hemline – the skirt has to be longer!), and lose the tights. (Better make sure it’s very springy today.)
Winter day: Your new sateen shift dress (look for intricate cut or detail) will go to work sharply with a crisp white blouse underneath, topped with a long pendant and grounded with stack-heeled boots. For extra warmth, add a long cardigan sweater.
Thaw day: Keep the cardigan nearby, but un-layer the dress. Add two or three chains to the pendant, and swap the tall boots for shooties or pumps – try a patterned leather or suede, or textured fabric for chic interest.
Winter day: You’re a knockout on your Valentine’s Day date in a little cocktail dress with sparkling details; add opaque black tights and strappy black platforms for a funky edge and to keep the hypothermia at bay.
Thaw day: You can dazzle a whole new crowd in the same dress with bare legs and a pair of the spring’s hot embellished t-strap flat sandals when the balmy days finally arrive.
I know it’s hard to wait for warmer weather, and it feels like spring will never come some days. Take comfort in the relaxed pace of your spring shopping (there’s really no great hurry) and hunt around for the best deals on the hottest pieces. While you’re browsing, there’s certainly no harm in snapping up some incredible end-of-season bargains on the staples you know you’ll use next year (cashmere, boots, a new dress coat) and getting one or two wearings out of them before the blossoms bloom.
Stay warm, duckies, and have faith – before you know it, we’ll be complaining about the sweltering heat!
