Shoes - What's Hot Right Now
One of the joys of summer (aside from not being cold for a few months, among other things) is getting to run around barefoot for a while. Despite public opinion about my footwear-acquisition obsession, I have always had an aversion to wearing shoes, and I’ll avoid wearing them around the house, in the yard, while driving, etc. as much as possible. But there are occasions when footwear is mandatory (“no shoes, no shirt, etc. etc.”), and so we need stylish options to wrap our little piggies in.
Yet once again, the change of seasons looms, and we are confronted with the eternal challenge of remaining comfortable with the temperature while on the cutting edge of the season’s trends. Those new boots are calling your name, but you can’t wear them with your madras mini and tank sweater, right? Are there any options that you can wear now and still be comfortable in come fall?
You’ve come to the right place, chickens. Of course I have solutions for you! What did you expect?
Flats: The first choice for seasonal changes. It’s so easy to move from a flat sandal to a ballet skimmer, especially if you choose a bright color or a summery fabric. And then when you trade your shorts for cropped trousers or a skirt (full and patterned or slim) they’ll still be a great option.
Jewel-tones: We’re so lucky that bright jewel-tones are everywhere this fall. You should shelve the yellow and Kelly green for now, but it’s a breeze to splice some bright blue or raspberry into the waning hours of your summer wardrobe, and then when fall really arrives they’ll add a bright note to your grey suit or your new knit sweater dress and tights.
Textures: Metallic's, reptiles and patents are versatile at the change of seasons, too. Switch your snake-print gladiator for a snake-print flat; choose a patent pump (and tote bag, for that matter) as a companion for your workaday wear, and know that a metallic evening sandal is right for any evening occasion, year-round. Save the suede for cooler climes (but keep your eyes peeled – they’re a big hit this fall).
Wedges: Trade in your (admittedly gorgeous) straw-heeled espadrilles for a stacked-leather pump with great texture or natty men swear details to add a new note to your shirtdress. When the weather finally catches up with us, it will look as smashing with trousers (or this season’s ubiquitous opaque legwear) as it does with bronzed stems.
Platforms: This one’s a shoo-in (ooh, terrible pun!): your wood-heeled sandals will fit nicely under the hems of your white jeans in August or your new dark boot-cuts in September. Look for new pumps and wedges with snipped or closed toes as a fall-ish addition to darker-toned long shorts and sturdier fabrics until the temperatures fall and you can add… you guessed it: tights!
Embellishments: A darling ballet flat with a stone or jewel detail looks absolutely terrific grounding a floaty cotton full-skirted sundress, but it will add just as much to a skinny jean with a bright shirt and a men swear-styled blazer come October. Look also to buttons and flirty bows; although floppy ribbons might not work in the slush of high winter, you can certainly wear them on dry days (or lobby for door-to-door service from your date!), and they’re deliciously girly.
Boots?: One of my favorite off-price footwear purveyors is peddling “summer boots” as a trend choice, a la Britney in Daisy Dukes with Uggs or one of the cuties from the O.C. in a denim mini and slouchy suede's… I’m definitely not buying into this one. For one thing, if I wear my boots year-round they lose their special ::zing!:: the first cold-enough day, and for another, it’s too hot! I get glowy enough in sandals and shorts on a toasty day, let alone sheathing my gams in leather. But that doesn’t mean I can’t start hunting down the perfect pair for later.
The Perfect Answer: Peep-toes! A glorious compromise between the sandal and the pump, peep-toes allow us to show off a peek of pedi now while it’s still balmy, then aren’t as bare as a strappy pump later under wide-legs, and when it’s really chilly we can just add tights! I’m stocking up (terrible pun not intended) now while the selection is still good: a suede pair for my navy sailor pants; a patent pair for bright contrast to my favorite new jeans and a tee; a snake-print pair for everything else. Don’t forget to keep those toes painted – it’s almost time to move to darker hues for fall.
Bonus: Ever had a heel wedgie? You know, when the hem of your trousers gets caught between your heel and the sole of your shoe when you wear slingbacks, slides, mules or any shoe with an open heel? Well, darling girls, I have discovered the answer to the heel wedgie! Kix by Katie! These fabulous little doodads keep your trouser hem exactly where it should be…hovering barely above the ground instead of crammed under your heel!
I’m holding out in bare feet or flip-flops every day I can (especially while I’m on vacation at the beach), but I’m looking forward to the new pairs I can add to my collection with the perfectly reasonable justification that they’re shoes for fall! Why wait until then to shop? What else would I do on vacation?
