On the Road Again: Summer Travel Style
Let’s play a game: I’m going on a trip, and I’m taking…Well, what am I taking? I’m going to be gone for a long weekend (woo hoo, four-day work week!), I’m hitting several different types of activities, and though I’d like to take three possible outfits for each situation, so as to don exactly the right thing after seeing what everyone else has on, that’s really not practical (as I don’t want to seem too high-maintenance, and besides, the last time my über-chic bag was that heavy, it crushed my hat and I broke a nail).
Fashionisti, relax. There are some easy choices to make so you can be sure to be perfectly turned out for all occasions on your summer jaunts, be they weekend hops, week-long beach strolls, or month-long marathons (hope there are laundry facilities!). Keep your wits about you, air out your travel bags, and throw wide the closet doors.
Tip 1: Stick with one color theme. This summer, I seem to be obsessed with the fresh, nautical combination of navy blue, Kelly green, hot pink and white. Which makes mixing and accessorizing quite simple, and I only have to take one handbag. Or, if you have warmer skin tones (or have already bronzed up for the season), try khaki, classic white and persimmon with touches of cobalt blue. Or the all-time classic, black and white with an accent color of your choice (I love lemon yellow or cherry red). Mixing and matching becomes much simpler that way, so you know that the sweater you wear one morning will also work over the little sundress you wear to dinner the next night.
Tip 2: Take pieces that can dress up or down. The classic pair of crisp shorts in a great neutral can team with a tank and some flip-flops, a floaty silk empire top and a wedge, or a slinky sparkler and some stilettos. Try that pair of white jeans with a nautical striped top and ballet flats or with sneakers and a tee shirt (just don’t slide into home plate). The right tunic can double as a cover-up for the beach or, with a metallic gladiator sandal, a killer minidress for cocktails. (And speaking of killer minidresses, did I mention that you should probably exfoliate before you leave town? And don't forget a light moisturizer afterward—leave the body butters at home as they are too heavy for warm weather!)
Tip 3: Lighten up with your beauty routine. Skip the hairdryer and embrace the summer’s humidity. Your waves will be beachy-perfect, your cuticle will thank you, and you’ll have more time for loafing around with the paper or an early-morning walk. Or, if your ‘do doesn’t “do” humidity, learn to love the slicked-back chignon, á la Audrey Hepburn. Keeps your hair damp and cool all day, and works perfectly for jumping in and out of the water. Loosen up with your make-up, too: use a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher, a lush coat of waterproof mascara, and a shimmery balm or gloss (also with SPF), and a spritz of fragrance. Add a sweep of bronzer to cheeks, forehead, and nose before dinner, and pat a little on your eyelids with your finger for a dynamite evening glow. A perfect match for your witty repartee.
Tip 4: Be helpful! Whether you’re sharing a house with friends, or you’ve been invited to stay as a guest, make sure you leave a dazzling impression on everyone else to increase your chances of repeating this sensational sojourn. If you’re a morning person, start the coffee maker when you leave for your walk so it’ll be ready for the next person who wakes up; pick up a paper while you’re strolling, and maybe a bag of fresh croissants. If you’re an activities fanatic, check out the area on the internet before you go and bring a list of day trips, golf courses, fishing boats, great restaurants and ice cream parlors to keep everyone interested. If you’re a kitchen whiz or a griller extraordinaire, offer to plan at least one meal to take the weight off the hostess: shop for ingredients, lay out some hors d’oeuvres, and let everyone watch the sun set while you take one for the team. Finally, don’t forget to strip the bed before you leave.
Aaah, I waited all year for summer and now it’s here. Packing is such an exciting, anticipatory part of going away – by choosing your traveling ensemble carefully, you will not only look fantastic for every situation but you’ll save tons of time on your routine and have more to spend with your friends. And don’t forget a hostess gift!
