The Best Swimsuits for Your Shape
It’s a gorgeous afternoon. I’m laid out on a lounge chair, steps from the quietly splashing Caribbean, on a peaceful beach. Darling wedges are tucked beneath my chair. A tall frosty beverage is at my left hand, a trashy beach novel at my right, and nothing is above me but the blue, blue sky. And I know that I’m looking fabulous, because as I was spreading out my towel, the woman next to me said, “That suit is fantastic. Where did you find a size small enough to fit you?” (Woo hoo!) And just now, the hot water sports attendant stopped toting the windsurfer (check out those biceps!) at the end of my chair and said, “Nice suit.” If there were any clouds, I’d be on the ninth one.
And then I woke up. Mmmm, but that was nice. However, the truth is that I haven’t yet done the swimsuit-shopping torture run for 2008, and I’m not going to be able to put it off any longer. The only thing worse that trying on countless bathing suits is having to wear last year’s model with the picked-out seat and faded colors to the first sunning event of the new summer. So I’ve cleared my calendar, and with my lovely dream still fresh in my mind I’m off to find a few winners. And how will I know the right one for me? Follow my shape, of course. That knowledge, combined with my astute assessment of the season’s trends, will land me in the middle of my dream right quick (albeit in a slightly less exotic locale).
Wide Waists: Look for a one-piece with slimming waist detail: an empire seam, a colorblock accent, ruching, or an all-over pattern to whittle your middle. A tankini with an apron or a-line top can skim a belly; if you’re buff but just broad, try a bright bikini to lengthen the line of your abs and draw attention away from the waist. There are many options with secrets underneath to suck in anything that moves.
Long Torsos: You girls need to shorten the apparent length of your torsos and add more length to your legs. Try a bikini with a higher waist or a cute high-waist one-piece, maybe with a ribbon or pieced-color detail. Steer clear of boy shorts or skirted bottoms; also avoid the ‘40s retro low-cut leg.
Short Torsos: You need the opposite: tankinis with low-waist bottoms, standard bikinis, and dropped-waist tank suits. Look for a tank with an Ursula-Andress-style belt (hunting knife optional). You can also add length with a higher neckline. If your legs are slender, you can choose a boy-short bottom or a darling little swim skirt (not at all grandma-ish anymore) for extra flirt.
Strong Hips: Here’s where separates become your best friend. Pick a top, either tankini or bikini, with a bright color or pattern to draw attention to your shapely upper half; choose a bottom with generous (but not matronly) coverage in a solid, matching, or small print. Don’t be afraid to get a bottom in a larger size than the top if it fits you – the only thing less flattering than an unattractive bathing suit is an ill-fitting one. Make sure it doesn’t cut you at the leg opening or waistline, or stretch too tightly across the seat. (Step, step, pluck! Step, step, pluck! is not a flattering way to mosey down the beach.)
Large Bust: Support, as you’ve probably guessed, is your best friend. Choose a suit with foundation built in. Look for wider straps to keep the girls where they belong, and make
sure it FITS. (Remember, bra experts say that 85% of us are wearing the wrong size; they usually fit us down a band size and up a cup size. I recently discovered that I’m not a 34A but a 32B!) You girls should do the opposite of the strong-hips crowd: Choose a dark solid or small pattern for the top half of your suit and a print or bright for the bottom half to balance your silhouette.
Small Bust: Fortunately, there are a zillion padded suits for us now. Bikinis are great, because we’re not in danger of falling out or embarrassing ourselves. Also look for suits with embellishment, ruffles, beading, bright colors, or other eye-catching detail to add oomph to your bustline. Look for one-pieces and tankinis with empire waists and shirring, ring details, or color piecing to further boost your petite top half. Metallic's are a sizzling trend this year – capitalize on your smaller size with a more reflective fabric.
Accessorize: The options for spicing up your suit are limited only by your imagination. Choose a slick little knit dress or a floaty beaded tunic for a cover-up, or a little sundress that can even go out for a sandwich. Shoes can range from flip-flops to espadrilles, but the hottest look this year is the platform. High or low, chunky or tapered, they add length to your legs without having to tiptoe through the sand or gravel. I just wouldn’t recommend hauling a cooler in them – stick to the flat sandals for that. The other chic way to add some individuality to your ensemble this year is jewelry. Bright resin or enamel bangles and even a beaded necklace can draw further attention to your lovely shape. Top everything with a broad-brimmed hat and killer shades (don’t spend your money on anti-aging lotions when you could spend it on a darling tote bag!), grab a thick broad-spectrum sunscreen, and you’re off.
It’s so hard to wait for the warmest days to be upon us, but once we’ve finished shopping, we can rest easily and be confident we’ll be looking our best. You’ll find yourself organizing beach, lake, and pool outings for more opportunities to wear your summer finery. Memorial Day is just around the corner – how about a volleyball tournament and barbeque? With sprinklers and water guns.
