Winter Wardrobe Guide

Sometimes I feel as if I'm always waiting for something. Waiting for next weekend. Waiting for that great movie to come out on DVD. Waiting for my BFF's baby to be born. Waiting for dinnertime. One wait that seems nearly in-ter-min-a-ble plagues me over and over again each season: the wait to wear the cool new threads I bought for the next clothing season. In March, I'm impatient at the last dregs of snow kicking around the streets, as my delicate silk slippers (that I so diligently shopped for) wait patiently in their pastel glory. In August, I twiddle my thumbs in the sullen heat, tired of my straw shopper and eager to load up my new chestnut suede tote. And here we are in mid-fall, one of the warmest on record, and I'm positively chafing to cart out the snuggly, luxurious fabulousness that is my winter wardrobe. Day after day, I watch the weather channel, anxiously scanning the ten-day forecast for the slightest hint of a nip in the air so I can layer up, cuddle in, and accessorize with sheep products (wool, cashmere, shearling), but NO! I am denied. Sixty-five through the weekend. Not even a frosty evening that might need a jacket. Why am I so forlorn, you may ask? Here, see for yourselves:

I've always had a soft, fuzzy spot in my heart for sweaters. Thick sweaters, thin sweaters, dressy sweaters, casual sweaters, you name it. And this year, there are so many choices! My top three: chunky wool cap-sleeved turtleneck dress over tights with slouchy boots. Poet-sleeved cashmere scoop-neck with big slouchy trousers and oxfords. Varsity-type cardigan with a great white blouse, girly silver necklace, fierce jeans and ballet flats. A perfect all-occasion casual outfit that will even let me walk around without worrying that my heels are too high.

And speaking of worrying, it seems that those teeny tiny little lines by my nose and mouth are not so teeny tiny any more. And worrying about them has just caused them to appear even more pronounced. Time to nip this little worry in the bud. My dermatologist recommends Juvéderm™, a fabulous next-generation dermal filler which lasts up to a year! The results are fantastic—so smooth and natural that everyone will notice, but no one will know! Back to winter wardrobes:

Texture is king this year, and there are so many great ways to incorporate it. Love my new patent Mary Janes under a tweed pencil skirt. Great flannel menswear trousers with a feminine blouse and suede pumps. Lots of chains over a tunic sweater with a mini, textured tights and tonal heels (for leg-lengthening). Layering a short jacket over a long shirt over skinny pants is not only spot-on for texture but a great way to keep warm (and move those favorite fall pieces into colder days, if there ever are any).

The good news is that I can wear color now and later. Fuchsia, red, and especially purple figure prominently in my fab new outfits, and they work just as well now as they will later. Accessories are always a great way to glam up the fact that you're wearing the same white blouse and wool shorts for the fifth time this month, and I love adding a bright red shoe or a splashy yellow belt for a graphic touch of mod. Animal prints are another great way to add interest to a simple ensemble, and I'm hard-pressed to choose a favorite from my stable of pony-skin choices: leopard, zebra, even giraffe. Just don't overdo it: one piece is plenty (although this adorable pony pen makes its own statement).

Outerwear choices abound in my underused closet! There's the swingy little jacket for just-cool days, and the long cardigan with the wide belt for a-little-cooler days. Casual chilly gets my new puffer vest, and dressier-chilly the a-line, ¾-sleeved patterned coat. When the winds blow hard from the northwest, I can't wait to pull out my handknit hat, scarf and gloves; there's something so snuggly cute about them that's irresistible, especially (I'm hoping) to that hunky guy who walks past me to the train every morning. And I'm so ready to bundle up in the shearling that I've saved for years to get – as soon as it's not linen weather anymore.

So what are you looking for to complete your cold-weather clothing selection? Have you picked up the cashmere sweater that will be your “I have nothing to wear!” mornings go-to item? What about the darling flannel jumper that looks grown-up gorgeous with a blouse and heels or weekend cute with tights and these adorable flats from B.Dazzled! (a fabulous source for great gifts by the way!) Versatility will be your friend as the winter stretches out long in front of you. And do you have two or three different pairs of boots? You know, the casual pair to wear with jeans; the slightly-dressy heel, maybe with a slouch, for going-out-daytime-cute-jeans outfits; the fully functional no-slip, no-slush footwarmers for horrible weather, and the totally-impractical-but-dead-sexy skyscrapers for unmitigated glamour and unforgiving attention-grabbing?

So now you understand my obsession with weather-watching. And my sullen disposition at the prospect of another above-average week of temperatures. But it's out there, ladies, and before we know it we'll be complaining about the cold. Unless we're so gleefully wrapped in our new acquisitions that we can't feel anything but chic.
