Top Picks For Fall Fashion
Sometimes I'm so busy I can't even shop. No, really. This month has been inSANE, and the ironic thing is, despite my moniker, I am stuck doing things I have to do instead of things I want to do. And the cruelest part is: my local mall just went world-class. That's right, girlies; I am now living within two miles of the following outposts of Nirvana: Gucci, Louis Vuitton, BCBG, Nordstrom, Burberry, Zara, Kate Spade, Neiman-Marcus, Michael Kors, Anthropologie… … … … Oh, sorry, where was I? Right, pining. It's like an ache in my soul, and I'm so booked-up, there's no time in the foreseeable future that I'll be able to indulge myself by breathing in their rarified atmosphere. Which dilemma brings me to my topic du jour : streamlining your fall acquisition process to maximize your results. In other words, shopping fast. And from home. (Darn it.)
Really, what we need is to distill the fall-fashion onslaught to a few key points; latch on to those that suit (pun intended) your figure, budget, and lifestyle, and know that you rock without rolling any further than your keyboard.
Menswear:
For those of you with curves, latch onto a retro look with a nipped-waist jacket and a tuxedo blouse over wide-leg trousers or a skirt with some fullness (although not in the hip). Snag a pair of those everywhere-oxford pumps (easy to walk in!) or a girly Mary Jane with a stacked heel. For the slim-hipped, choose a longer jacket, possibly double-breasted, and a trouser with pleats. Keep it a little feminine in a soft blouse with cuff or neckline froth. For those of you on the boyish side go with a slim trouser as well, but not too tapered, please. Flats will ground you, but sassy heels add so much height and slimness that you could excuse that pot de crème at lunch. Another fabulous look is a deep-V vest over a silky blouse and cuffed trousers – very Bond Street , fedora optional. Ooh, and speaking of outerwear, if you haven't done so already, go get a trench!
Prints:
Please remember that any print should be in proportion to your body size: petites look like couches in slipcovers in a large-scale floral, while a more full-sized figure will be inflated in a small animal print. Another tip to keep in mind is that a print will emphasize whatever part of your body it covers: to disguise figure flaws, stick with solids or tone-on-tone woven prints (there are loads of luxurious damasks and textured tweeds to choose from this season). Use prints to liven up sedate suiting and update last year's wardrobe staples. And the final nugget: a great print can be a foundation for a sensational outfit: select one of the colors from the print and echo it with a shoe; pick another color and find a darling day clutch. Which leads me to…
Color:
Another two-sided coin; acres of neutrals planted sparsely with bright accents. Which isn't to say that the browns, greys, and blacks are boring, no-sirree: texture is what entices here, in tweeds, velvets, brocades, jacquards, and suede. And who could forget this season's comin'-round-again hit, patent leather? Now appearing everywhere in handbags, belts, and even coats, it's the perfect foil to a sedate tweed -and-cashmere outfit, and an easy way to add a pop of color. Try red with black-and-white birdseye, or for the more adventurous, add vibrant blue to your brown-and-grey glen plaid.
Color is appearing not only in prints but in bright blocks in mod-ish dresses and sweaters and accessories; one sure-fire hot item to sass up your fall range is a knit dress with bright graphic details, in a mini silhouette over tights and stack-heel pumps or boots… mmm, yes, that will definitely be my go-to look for at least the next quarter or so. Wear it early in the fall with bare arms and legs, then ward off the chill with legwear and a fine-gauge cashmere tee underneath.
And Speaking of Belts:
Buy one. Buy a dozen. Put them over everything: a wrapped sash over a long white shirt, a narrow calf-hair one in your natty trousers, a wide buckled black one cinching (eek, flashback: Adam Sandler and Chris Farley as Gap Girls) your camel overcoat. An easy way to add a metallic accent without feeling like an Oscar statuette. You could wear the same outfit every day and no one would notice (well, except me) if you changed your belt and shoe style each time. Easy updates!
So, I point-and-click instead of stroll-and-peruse, and it's almost as good. (No iced latte, but no geeky mall-rat boys either.) And hey, if I do my research right, it'll make it easier when I actually get to the bricks-and-mortar (oh, who am I kidding, it's marble-and-glass) Mecca in a couple of weeks if I map out my route. That's right, it's research ! Wonder if I can charge someone for my time…
Happy Shopping!
