Shop Girl's Fall Shoe Preview: The Devolution of the Pedicure
While I bury my azalea-ed piggies in the sand and enjoy the warmth of the sun on my bare knees, my faithful flops at my side, I realize that there are only so many days left to air the distal digits before the snows fly. And as the earth tilts on its axis and the glaciers spread over the land, so will leather march upward over the feet and stems of humans all over the Northern Hemisphere. From toe cleavage to instep to ankle to knee, our footwear sheaths the delicate skin that once breathed freely in the warmth of the sun. (On the plus side, we can now dedicate our pedicure money to exfoliating treatments instead of polish changes.) The forecast: chilly; the options: mostly classic with a chance of flirty. Read on!
70°:
Shelve the espadrilles until next year (definitely a what not to wear item), but your cork wedges you can milk for another few weeks, with short pants and skirts. Sandals will be fine until mid-September, but only if they're more sedately colored, like black, brown, or metallic. (For better or for worse, it seems the flip-flop has become a permanent part of our fashion lexicon, like the tee shirt: eternal, versatile and comfortable, there's really never an "out" season, although in snowdrifts they can be a tad impractical.) For height, work with peep-toes and slingbacks, and not too sturdy a heel—stretch the frivolity of summer out as loooooong as possible.
60°:
You can smell the fall coming, but it's really not cool enough to break out the ankle-wa rmers yet. Skimmers, flats, and ballerinas will go with everything you wear, from skirts to menswear trousers to little day dresses, and a pair of opaque tights under your miniskirt will help the transition go even more smoothly. If you're after some height and the of-the-moment look, this season's go-to shoe is the Mary Jane pump. While it's not for everyone (the strap, if too high, can emphasize a short leg or a wide calf), there's a reason this style has been coming around and around since the thirties: it's comfortable, not too hard to walk in, and it works with nearly everything in your closet. Jeans: check. Trousers: check. Tweed crops and a belted white shirt: check. Comfortable enough to live in knit mini-trapeze dress with sleek sleeves, a scoop neckline and matching opaque tights: check. See what I mean?
50°:
Cool weather is imminent…wrap the textiles a little further up your foot. Try another retro favorite: the oxford pump. Ground your shrunken blazer and cuffed menswear trews with a sturdy loafer or kiltie flat with classic details. (I, the footwear fanatic, have the perfect pair that I've kept since high school, but you can find others all over the place.) Work a pair of peep-toed wedges with your jeans for an evening out, or a platform skimmer for casual anywhere looks (height of a heel without the pain!). Texture comes into the forefront as well: tweed, suede, patent, and pony hair shroud all silhouettes in a hint of richness.
40°:
There's no denying it by this point: summer is gone. Soothe your sorrow by swathing your ankles in the latest short-boot silhouettes, for trousers of all widths. I will, however, take this opportunity to preach one bit of fashion truth: there is no opportunity under which showing the top of your bootie under a short trouser hem is appropriate. If you must wear booties with a short or knee-length skirt, the opaque tights you are duty-bound as a fashionista to wear must match the color of the boots exactly so as to create a harmonious and long leg-line (hence the leopard-print boots are for trousers only). In the evenings, try a satin pump or sandal in a bright jewel-tone with a simple solid-colored dress, or a jeweled stiletto with a patterned dress. And it goes without saying (but I will anyway) that any of these options would work with jeans and a silky top or a dynamite jacket. And thank heaven: for those of us with an aversion to high heels, a sparkly or satin ballet flat works just as well (although you miss the opportunity to add three inches to your leg line and WORK those slim Rich & Skinnys).
30°:
No, not yet. I'm not emotionally equipped to deal with full-on cold weather yet. We have plenty of time to formulate a plan for boots—more on that later, my chickens.
Well, there's a bright side to all of this end-of-summer melancholy, and that's the whole realm of new clothes available. Fat new Vogue, nip in the air, rediscovering old wardrobe favorites…::sniff, sniff:: Drat, I'm getting all misty. I'll need a minute to collect myself—go forth and retail, and let me know what you find!
