Seasonal Style Must-Haves

Warm. I'm finally warm. After so many months spent in virtual hibernation, I'm thrilled to shed my layers, emerge from my den and blink, pale and astonished, in the bright light of spring. And although my skin may be ghostly (enter self-tanner, stage right) and my hair three shades too dark (enter expensive salon treatments, stage left), I'm good and ready to show off my long-ignored shoulders, knees and piggies (not to mention my navel, if it's lucky) in the hottest threads of the season. It's like the day after your eighth birthday: there are so many new toys to play with, all with the glow of new still on 'em, you hardly know which one to pick up first! Lay out a good map of your week's engagements, check the forecast carefully, and strategize the perfect course for your chic new acquisitions (and don't forget to hit the bell for each trend you nail). Ooh, a little shiver of excited anticipation just ran up my spine.

Monday: Work; lunch date with best friend; cocktail reception with college alumnae club. Start with a gorgeous, feminine jacket with gloriously springy details. Add a demure little blouse in a neutral or a flirty floral print, then those terrifically lengthening seersucker trousers (nautical trend: bing!) and a bright red shoe with a heel and a peep-toe. Classic gold jewelry, straw bag, giant shades.

Tuesday: Client meeting; yogalates; grocery shopping. Keep things business-like in a slim skirt and delicate blouse or an eternal wrap dress with simple heels so the focus is on your polished image. Carry your exercise essentials in a crisp tote or a handbag on the neater side of the huge-bag trend (bing!), and don't forget that you never know who's lurking in the prepared-foods sectiSephora.com, Inc.on of the grocery store - wear the cute workout clothes.

Wednesday: Work-from-home day with afternoon press-check (darned "sometime between nine and two" cable appointments!). Wide-leg jeans (bing!) will let you stay casual while still looking polished enough to represent the company at the press check; grab the cropped trench off the back of the chair where you left it in case it rains on your way home. A ruffled little blouse balances your proportions, and the metallic (bing!) flats are easy to slip off when you sit back down on the couch to polish off your email inbox (and who's going to mind that Oprah's on in the background?).

Thursday: Work; yogalates; dinner at Mom and Dad's. Grab a suit in the latest city-shorts proportions, and add a touch of personality with a sweet sweater shell underneath. (Black-and-white trend: bing!) A simple little skimmer keeps you moving comfortably all day, and it means you can actually walk the dog with your mom while dad loads the dishwasher.

Friday: Work (casual day!); happy hour with office friends (always turns into a late-night event). Try loose shorts with a striped knit, or Bermudas and a textured top with some volume, great wedges or flat sandals, and a slim jacket to pull it together. A cute bag adds interest without being fussy; go with a classic pair of shades in case there's an outside table at the café at lunchtime.

Saturday: Errands ignored all week; dinner and a movie with three friends; possible dessert and coffee afterwards to meet up with group of guy friends. Knit minidress with big sporty jacket (athletic-as-haute-couture trend: bing!), hobo bag, stretchy wedges, wraparound shades and a high ponytail. For the night, change into those skinny white jeans and platform sandals with a bright empire blouse. (Don't forget a topper for the icy air-conditioned theater.) Not too much, but still sweet and a little bit sexy in case one of the guys brings a new friend for you to meet.

Sunday: Brunch baby shower; plant shopping with garden-crazed sister; at-home decompression. Here's your chance to shine in that adorable little empire day dress you had to have but couldn't figure why - add fun espadrilles to dress it up for the shower, then slip into flat sandals and you'll look breezy and casual enough to spin through three nurseries and advise on the perfect shade of geraniums for the pot by your sister's back door. By the time you get home, you'll be good and ready to slip into loose boyfriend chinos and a slim tank and flops (or better yet, bare feet) for a cool salad, a frosty beverage, and a couple of hours with your favorite scented candle and a beach-worthy novel on the back porch to get calm for another busy week ahead.

Well, don't you feel good having made such a comprehensive group of decisions in just one sitting! Now, go relax, put your feet up, finish that magazine, and sleep soundly knowing that all week long, you'll turn heads. See you in the "Do" column!
