Must-Haves for Winter 2006-2007
I'm hard-pressed to remember a cold-weather season when the fashion gods were kinder to those of us who live in frosty climes. Past winters have extolled the virtues of flirty, feminine dresses in delicate silk; the stiletto sandal and sleeveless beaded top with jeans for evening (spectacular for trudging down a slushy urban sidewalk); or the Return of the Blouse—where's the insulation in that? This year, thank heaven, someone talked some sense into the designers, and we have a whole spectrum of options that not only let us stay on the cutting edge of the fashion trends, but also keep us from frostbitten extremities as we traipse around town looking fabulous. Of course, we'll now have to find a way to negate the Gingerbread Latte other than shivering off the three hundred calories, but a girl has to make sacrifices.
Have you stocked up yet? Here are your target items, in no particular order:
- Skinny jeans (or straight-leg) in dark indigo, light gray or black.
- Winter shorts with tights and platforms or peep-toes as a great daytime alternative to a skirt or pants; how about tuxedo-style Bermudas for evening?
- Miniskirt (with tights or leggings and flats or boots) - this can work on many body types if you keep the opaque hose and footwear and skirt all of a similar shade.
- Order your holiday invitations NOW! Show them that you truly are the hostess with the mostest (style, chic, glamour, etc).
- Try a retro jacket over little Audrey-esque ankle pants and flats as a darling ca
sual look.
- Belts belts belts: tight-waisted over blouses and jackets (and coats and sweaters), or hip-slung over knits and slim legs. Check out leather, suede, obi sashes, and chain links.
- A big-knit cardi or sweater dress is a terrific way to stay warm; remember to go for slim proportions to highlight your figure.
- Gray and black headline the neutral trend for this season; the good news is that it means you can get away with fewer, more expensive pieces and mix and match to your heart's content.
- Black-and-white echoes the above theme, and makes a great palette for a graphic patterned knit dress or a silky kimono blouse.
- Layers: a tank under a shirt under a sweater under a jacket over trousers make an easy way to handle those wild swings in ambient temperature from outside to in (as it seems that all offices are over-cooled in the summer and over-heated in the winter!). Remember to keep all of your pieces close to your body so you layer up without bulking up.
- Proportion contrast: slim over voluminous, or full over skinny; long over short or short over long: hide your flaws and accentuate your assets!
- Coat: military, girly, or cropped. Just remember that this is a long-term, staple item, and you should tend toward the classic in line and fabric; update it with a right-now touch with that waist-cinching belt you bought a few minutes ago.
- Boots: short, tall, flat, or shoe-boot will keep you marching in style instead of shelling out extra for cabs on snowy days. (Calories be gone!)
- Platform pumps really rock your legs in those slim trousers.
- Round-toe flats (these are very Alexander McQueen) give a classic, feminine look to jeans, cropped pants or minis with leggings or tights.
- It's really unavoidable: pick up a Statement Handbag (or two) to add some pizzazz to your heavy-on-the-neutrals outfit.
- Cuff bracelets and gold chains make terrific highlights with simple, elegant clothing in sedate colors.
- A knit empire dress and a sweaterdress will take you anywhere you need to go in a dress this season.
- Red shoes are an outstanding punch of color in this somber-hued season. (And no, they don't need to have a matching belt, but how sassy you'd look with both!)
Now you can peruse the boutiques with a purpose. Keep an eye on your friends' wardrobes, too - the holidays are coming, and how excited would they be if you filled in their closets while perfecting your own? Hmmm, kudos from your nearest and dearest are almost as rewarding as perfect strangers on the street complimenting your sartorial flair. And now you get both, in one sweet shopping trip. Does it get any better than that?
