Save the LV Trunk for the Riviera

What's the chi-chi girl's biggest spring problem? Going somewhere for a weekend trip, two little days, and finding yourself agonizing all week beforehand about what to pack. We want to have the perfect outfit for every possible occasion we might encounter all weekend, but we don't know what everyone else will be wearing, so we OVERPACK. Two problems: 1) this makes few friends in the car as your luggage overhangs the back seat and bumps your neighbor in the head for an hour and a half, and 2) it is NOT chi-chi to show up lugging a hockey bag full of every article of clothing and pair of shoes you own. Simplicity, girls, is the key to effective style. Save the LV trunk for the Riviera.

For example, if Saturday consists of Breakfast, Gallery, Shopping and Lunch, Beach and Barbecue, and Amusement at the Local Night Spot, do you take two options for every event? Do you overdress to be high-style? A resounding "NO!" should be your answer. While your white Chloé pantsuit and gold lamé skyscrapers are smashing, you don't want to look like a prima donna who's afraid to get in there and play a pickup game of volleyball with the rest of the gang. And there ain't nothin' more embarrassing than being caught on your way to the loo in the wee hours in your silk nightie when everyone else is in cotton pj's. Screams "I'm DESPERATE to land a man."

Take pieces that can work together in different ways for the most effective hauling. For Breakfast, which will undoubtedly be strong coffee (you are bringing a hostess gift, oui ?), fruit, lox and bagels, go with Bermudas and a nautical striped sweater, á là Sienna. For Gallery and Shoppig06000212ng, ditch the stripes and wear the Bermudas with an empire cami, your new ankle-wrap espadrilles and your seersucker shrunken blazer (preppy is never out, just sleeping). Beach? Choose your most flattering two-piece, a tunic for cover, and chic flops to protect your bright spring pedi. (You DID remember to exfoliate, self-tan and protect your skin, yes? Perfect for packing are these fabulous little wonders.) Afterwards, shower off the excess sand (don't forget après-sun skin care!), put on your new wide-leg trews, a floaty top, and killer platforms. Grab your sexy cardi for after the sun sets and you head downtown for a bit of socializing with the other urban refugees. Sunday you can recycle the cardigan with a mini and a tee, the thongs, and you're ready for the trek home! And it will all fit in that darling little T. Anthony Bancroft bag. Your car-mates will thank you, especially with more room for the souvenir shopping bags.

See how easy that was? Now accept that invitation to the weekend at the beach with CONFIDENCE - you never know who's going to bring a single guy friend!

xoxo,

Shop Girl

P.S. My friend Jamie just called, and she has to pack for a weekend trip—being picked up from the airport on the back of a MOTORCYCLE! Talk about weeding out your choices—can you imagine getting a weekend's worth of clothing into a studded saddlebag (mmmmm, studded bag!)? She's going with a pair of jeans and her cowboy boots and (of course) leather motorcycle jacket for the ride. Thank goodness for the black-and-white trend; so easy to color-coordinate! In her backpack will be a white t-shirt, black cardigan, denim crops, black tank, white shorts, metallic sandals, little cotton pj's, and a bikini for the occasional lake. For beauty, she'll keep it simple with all-in-one makeup, combination face/body/hair shampoo and that perfect gloss everyone's talking about. How romantic!
