Dressing Up for the Holidays

Holiday Dressing

Parties are the reason we all exist, right? I mean, look at InStyle: if they didn't have red-carpet events to swoon over, the mag would be pretty boring, with just some recipe ideas and the horoscopes. So let's all take a moment to give thanks (I know, I know, that was last month) that December brings us ample opportunity to go somewhere else at night than our couches or bathtubs. Here's what to wear while you're tripping (no, not literally, please) all over town.

Open House Party

One of my favorite types of gatherings, the Open House lets everyone be themselves, whenever they're ready. Be elegant and comfortable for an afternoon of visiting in this cashmere wrap sweater and brown velveteen pants. Keep the theme going in sexy but sweet velvet floral-embellished pumps. And don't you dare show up without a hostess gift: these votive candleholders are a great choice, or send a vase of flowers the morning of the party.

Cocktail Party at a Friend's House

This is a fabulous opportunity to try out different looks and not worry about trekking around downtown in the breeze in eveningwear. Go quietly chic in a cross-front cami dress and a beautiful lace pump, or rock the house down in this outstanding tuxedo jacket, with the matching shorts or with jeans and pumps. Carry your MILK (money, ID, lipstick, keys) in this darling and different beaded clutch bag, but once again, don't forget the gift for the hosts: these silver julep cups will definitely get you invited back for the Kentucky Derby party in the spring.

Big Holiday Shindig in a Cavernous Hall

Your public awaits. Since you'll be one of many, make sure that your ensemble is truly head and shoulders above the crowd. As a matter of fact, show them off (your head and shoulders) in this throwback red taffeta dress with a jeweled evening pump to match.

Little details, like this surprising beaded handbag find, can loft your outfit up to superstar status. Enjoy yourself in the gala atmosphere, and make sure your behavior is as exemplary as your outfit; you never know who's lurking in a crowd that big!

Family Gathering with Presents and Too Much Food

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There are two kinds of holiday outfits: ones you can wear in front of your grandmother, and ones you CAN'T wear in front of your grandmother. This is not the time to show off your décolletage or your toned back. Stick with holiday jewel tones in sophisticated silhouettes, like this velvet-trimmed wrap top with black gauchos, or comfy velvet pants if you plan on gorging yourself stupid (and this would be the place to do it). Make your mom feel like she's still taller than you are in these copper skimmers, which should also allow you to help with the dishes without wanting to gnaw your foot off at the ankle.

Gift Exchange with The Girls

The most intimate of your holiday gatherings, keep it sassy-casual in honor of the fact that you all really wish you were able to dress like this more often. Beribboned suede boots with these cropped cuffed jeans, a ruffled georgette blouse and a dynamite leather O.C. clutch are just the right note; bring each of them the perfect spa gift to win their eternal gratitude. They are your personal therapists, confidantes, and advisers; if they're happy, you're happy, right?

If You're Hosting a Dinner Party

You can stress about getting all the side dishes to the table while they're still warm, but please don't worry about your clothes. The best bet for a suave entertainer at home is comfortable Mark.125x125glamour, so you can focus on making sure your guests are having fun. Loop this silk sash around the hips of your satin pants, topped with an elegant and sexy smashing lacy tank. (Bonus: sleeveless top lets you stand the heat in the kitchen without schvitzing .) Slip into a kitten-heeled jeweled brocade slide for a long evening's work, and line up a foot massage from your favorite gentleman after the last guests depart.

Now while these are excellent suggestions, I fully expect you to go out there and find outfits that feel right on YOU. There's no way you can be comfortable if you don't like your outfit. But remember that a high heel is always worth the agony - think what they do for the length of your legs. Enjoy yourselves - I'll see you in 2006!

Runway to Retail

Have you ever wondered what boutiques the world has in store? Come on, we all indulge in the occasional "Fabulous Life Of." on Vh1!, jonesing to know where the head honchos of major companies get their garb or where celebrities pick up that bling. Then there are those days when glamour girls stare out the window, gazing at the bleak scenery, wondering what the rich and famous are up to in Cabo. If you can relate to these diamond-encrusted dreams, Runway to Retail ( www.runwaytoretail.com ) --a new website launched by the fashionistas behind Factio Media--may just be your new best friend. Runway to Retail will spill the secrets of shopping in cities far (think Paris ) and near (nope, we haven't forgotten Chicago, San Francisco or New York or several others for that matter.)

We know where you can score everything from beauty baubles to jangling jewelry and we'll even clue you in on where to find the nearly-$3,000 Kohler Hatbox toilet. Oh yes-- luxury is found in all places, and we'll dig for gold everywhere.

Other features of the site include a shopping guide to 25 cities spread throughout this fashionable planet of ours. We have writers living it up everywhere from Atlanta to Madrid , scoping out the scene and writin' down every haute detail.

We hope you'll use this site as your own personal fashion map, consulting it to pick the hottest paths on which to break in your fanciest kicks.

Cheers to your most fashionable year, and we'll see you on the Runway!  Sign up at www.runwaytoretail.com/signup.cfm
