A Shoe for All Seasons

I've been on a What Not to Wear kick lately, drenching myself in the schadenfreude of the sartorially challenged, but it's led me to one conclusion: most people can't dress their way out of a Searle bag without daily advice. Now, I don't have time to go through the whole gamut of fall fantasy right now, but have enclosed some hints wrapped in a shopping list for your precious piggies.

Dearest, buy these:

For Work

•  A stunning tweed pump. Either high or kitten-heeled, these would be just right with a pencil skirt and a Victorian blouse for work, or with wide-leg slacks and a silk blouse for cocktails (dare I say, "at the yacht club"?).

•  A round-toe hair-calf pump to dress up that chunky grey sweater-dress you bought for work; wear it on the weekends with a pair of stacked-heel boots.

•  This brown-and-pink flat will work nicely with herringbone trousers and a velvet blazer on weekdays, and chinos and a denim jacket on casual Fridays. Or this metallic one.

•  The perfect black pump. Dressed-up with a pinstripe suit, or dressed down with a tank and jeans, it should be your go-to shoe when you open the closet and say, "AAAHHH - I have nothing to wear!"

•  And on casual Fridays, dress up your trouser jeans and a cashmere turtleneck with these sassarific wedges.

For Weekend

•  Saturday errand-running demands a comfy clog to wear with your jeans; the height will keep your legs looking endless, while the orthopedically friendly footbed helps you recover from your workaday skyscrapers.

•  Going out can be so easy: either a sexy silk cami and jeans, or your slinky LBD, would look fabulous with carnal carmine silk-bowed pumps, or metallic sandals as enticing as these.

•  Sunday brunch: these peep-toe wedges look terrific with cropped khakis and a sweater jacket, or a denim pencil skirt and a corduroy blazer. These embellished ballet flats are a great long-walk-to-the-café alternative.

•  Sunday afternoon with the paper: I found the perfect trainer for the new Juicy track suit; this would also be fabulous with, of course, jeans and a cashmere hoodie for flea marketing or bagels and coffee. While the weather's still warm, you could substitute these chic flops.

For Cold Weather

•  If you're going through a cold snap out there on the Left Coast, start with these western stacked-heel boots. They're perfect with gauchos, skirts or cropped jeans.

•  You'll want to add a pair of flat riding boots for weekend flexibility; great with jeans for casual, or the boho-chic tiered skirt and tie-front blouse.

•  Don't forget ankle boots. Fabulous versatility and a fall season must-have.

•  You'll need to replace your ratty fancy boots from last year. Road salt and spilled cocktails are so unkind to suede.

•  If your new cadre of friends decides to include you in their weekend jaunt to Mammoth or Tahoe, you'll definitely need some foul-weather gear. Keep your tootsies warm in these boots, and stuff your skinny Paiges down inside. Top with fur vest, and you're even ready for Sundance (dream on). Or if you must continue the Ugg thing, these new ones with laces are outstanding. Might even get myself a pair.

So that's all I have time for today - remember that pedi'ed feet are happy feet, and if you don't look good from the knees down, it doesn't hardly matter what the rest of you is wearing. Shop happy!
