Fall Wardrobe - Quality Over Quantity

Finally the heat wave is lifting (a touch), entertaining television is returning to primetime ( The O.C. anyone?) , and the utterly boring sales racks have turned over a new leaf - a fall leaf if you will. These much-welcomed events put a spring (not the seasonal kind) in my step. It all came to happen last Sunday while I was filling my day with a movie marathon. What started with some old faves The Way We Were and Pride and Prejudice on the couch, ended with Batman Begins at the theater. (And I do know that Batman Begins was the lead-off summer movie. But I spend more time in fashion houses than movie houses, so I tend to fall behind.)

After watching this dark, brooding tale mostly set in a cold clime, and admiring Katie Holmes in prim skirts and silk blouses, I was reminded that fall really was on the way. (I mean, it is September, and our duty as trend-abiding fashionistas to pull out our jeans and closed-toe pumps, if not boots.) Fall is my season; I've always been more of a tweed skirt and cashmere girl and less of a string bikini babe. To see me, you would know what I mean. Folica beauty Products

Anyway, the promise of fall totally changed my outlook on things. A ninety degree heat index no longer mattered to me; my slouchy Frye boots in saddle are on the way. (My friend Designer Diva and I had a temporary moment of insanity and ordered our boots earlier this week after being wait-listed for a month.)

This fall I'm totally changing my tactic. In the past I've made my list and it's usually a mile long. Not this year; I'm going for quality over quantity. I feel as if I've matured wardrobe-wise; she she me and I have always discussed (and confirmed) the merits of owning one really great piece, (my great piece would be MJ's Stella Bag) versus several mediocre items, and this season I'm going to follow my own advice.

My first 'grown-up' wish list:

  • A great bag. After my closet overhaul, I tallied approximately 27 bags (vintage and keeper, alike). My findings led me to discover that I don't have a brown pocketbook - a major problem for fall. Brown should be a staple in everyone's closet. I'll be purchasing a Botkier in cognac.
  • Fabulous pumps. Let's see, with so much to choose from this might be more difficult. I'm leaning toward this pair of sweet brown pumps, which is sooooo perfect for fall's romantic, prim look. Keyhole styles are everywhere this year, so a fresh pedi is necessary and when wearing tights (also in vogue for fall), mind the unsightly seam. Just as important as the pumps are the flats you know. (They help to save your soles!)
  • A look. I feel like after spring and its all-over-the-board styles, I want to pick one look ( prim sophisticate is my choice) and stick to it for fall. I can't promise not to dabble in a 'Sienna Miller-inspired' outfit or the "Western trend", but for the most part it will be pencil skirts, soft blouses, oversized sweaters and tall boots for me.
  • Which brings me to boots. I'm embracing flat-footed boots and hoping to hunt down a (what else) brown pair. I'm thinking that for me (and yes I've seen the fall books with 'black is back' splashed all over them) brown will be my new signature color. Not to worry though, I will have a black pair as well.

I know you're thinking I'm not well with such a short down list. In truth, the closet overhaul really helped. It forced me to pair down (not something I'm familiar with) and really focus on my own style. Isn't that what fashion (and shopping) is really about?

Now, a new conundrum to explore - how do we feel about vests as a layering piece? Mmmmh. . .

Stay cool - as in out of the heat.
