Accessorize
For Summer
Dear
She She Me,
I'm
hoping this letter finds you fabulously well, settled into your
apartment and completely confident in your new setting. Who am I
kidding? You're probably obsessing over beige walls, the lack of
space in your closet, the absence of my closet, wrinkled
white button-downs and the fact that the hipster coffee shop girl
there seems to chat regularly with the hipster coffee shop girl
here, as she's just as snooty to you when you order your frou-frou
latte. Some things never change.
You
haven't missed a ton here, just the usual routine of coffee, fashion
mags, cell phone rants (though not as much, because I've learned
it's rather costly when you go over your allotted minutes. Hello?
When did rationing start again?). I did just finish up some
much-needed retail therapy (it seems goodbyes do have
an effect on me), where I stocked up on loads of fabu accessories
for summer. Please tell me you have not forgotten that though
clothes do make the fashionista, it's the accessories that make
the clothes. I figured there was a small-to-medium chance that you
had actually forgotten that tidbit of fashion-forward knowledge,
so I've made you a cheat sheet (see list below). In fact,
I figured that extended time away from me and my approving (or disapproving)
eye, coupled with the stress of new environs, would result in a
fashion breakdown. I would hate to see years of work and friendship
go to waste, so I'm going to keep you in-the-know via letters and
email. You can thank me when I visit. Now, back to accessorizing
for the summer.
Take
the list I made for you to some of the new shops in your area and
hand it to the most fashionable associate there (preferably female
[no offense guys, but it's just not the same], and an accent usually
helps). She'll take good care of you in my absence. A little
retail FYI; it's always good to develop relationships with
sales associates, as they make you feel very important and semi-famous.
They'll call you when a shipment comes in that you may like, they'll
bring you water in the dressing room (or even a cocktail, sometimes)
and will always tell you how smashing you look,
except of course when you don't. And since you're there and I'm
here, you'll need some help.
Summer
Accessory Essentials (in no particular order, as they are
all important and essential; hence the title):
Sunglasses . They should be over-sized,
very
dark and not mirrored (that is soooo out, unless of course they're
aviators and you're channeling the L.A. look). Remember, the wider
and darker they are, the easier it will be to people watch, which
will be useful in your new town. Don't be fooled into thinking one
pair will do. Would you wear one pair of wedges all summer? I should
hope not. Pick up a pair in black, tortoiseshell and a fun
color, like deep green. (To clarify, when I say color, I don't
mean thick neon. I'm referring to shades with subtly tinted frames,
like these Michael
Kors gems.
Wood. I can see your confused face now, but SSM,
you must get several wood
necklaces and do not be afraid to layer them. They look great
with tanks and skirts, which have become my summer uniform, but
are fabulous with more formal ensembles too. Don't stop with a necklace;
pick up some wood bangles
and earrings
too; just try to wear them separately and not all at once.
Bold Necklaces. See above info on wood, but this
is not limited to wood. Think double and triple strands of coral
and turquoise.
Other colorful
stones and beads work as well. The layered look is big for summer,
She She Me, so that means we can be a little more subdued in dress.
Since you're going into some high-powered exec job, you should try
layers
of gemstones with your crisp button-downs. You would be so
corporate chic. In addition to that, you can mix and match
pieces and textures. For example, coral necklaces with gold
hoops and a statement-making ring. Definitely stow the small
jewels and go big for the summer.
The Bag. Try not to forget there's more to accessories
than jewelry. I suppose now that you have a real job (and your worth
is no longer determined by the bag you carry), you'll need a more
professional-looking
tote, but when you're out and about ditch structured for slouch.
Spring satchels are all about soft, touchable leather and other
luxe fabrics. Have fun; choose a bag in a bright color or print.
I know you're really aching for white, but I'm a little skeptical
to give you the go-ahead for several reasons. The first being red
wine, the second being your failure to cap your lipsticks. I'm thinking
a maharaja-ish hobo may be the way for you to go.
Wedges. Get a couple of pairs; maybe a rattan
heel and a wood
heel. Do practice walking before socializing; a thicker
heel doesn't mean mobility is easier. Do wear them with everything
from jeans and skirts to slacks and dresses. When paired with appropriate
attire, they can become office-friendly.
Flats. Certainly not intended to take the place
of heels, but some outfits are made for flats. Find some metallic
skimmers for summer and you'll be set. If you're looking for
an investment try Kate
Spade's, knotted slides. If you just want to jump on the trend
for a limited time, you'll be safe (and not broke) with Urban
Outfitters' metallic slides.
You
should be good as far as accessories go, for now. Try not to go
crazy and make any big purchases without consulting me. Remember
to keep your mani fresh (it may be time to jump back on the color
on nails/neutral on toes wagon) and limit blow-dry use to only working
days. I'll be back in touch soon.
