When it comes to shoes. . .
Finally, some cool-ish weather. I know I'm not alone in my excitement about getting to pull out my always-in-style-perfect-for-any-occasion boots and my I've-missed-you-since-last-fall leather pumps. Somehow, fall shoes complete any outfit. I have never felt more runway ready (despite buying every kohl liner and pink gloss on the market) than when I'm donning tall suede boots. I think the easiest way to grab a piece of high fashion is by the soles.

This season we'll need just about every style of shoe out there (heel, flat, round, pointy, tall boot, bootie). I'm not exaggerating purely for the means of justification. I pulled out my long-running 'things I have/want/need' list to do a calculated assessment of my shoe situation and this is how it went.

My List for Fall Footwear as of October 8, 2004, subject to be added to at any time:
1. A chic pair of flats. (Have & Want) Have two pairs from last year, but could always use another.
Those of you slow to the trend have a multitude of choices in color, toe and heel. Have some fun with this style and choose a colorful pair.
2. Leather Pumps. (Have) Have two pairs of black - one pointy-toe and one round-toe, both are 3.5" heel. All bases covered.
3. Tweed Pumps. (Want/Need) Have nothing resembling tweed for footwear in my closet. Must get immediately.
4. Black Boots. (Have) Mmmh, time for new soles and a polish.
Every year at season's end I'm cursing these boots because of worn heels and scuff marks. Every year I vow to get a new pair. And every year I pull them out re-sole and re-heel them, polish them and spend money on something else. I suggest you do the same UNLESS your black boots are square-toed, chunky-heeled or faux leather. If any of the aforementioned are true, invest in some black
boots, you'll have them forever.
5. Bootiesicon. (Want) Good with skirts and dresses. In an effort to be more 'urban' will not wear with hose or tights.
It took awhile for me to warm up to this look, but I do think a pair of booties (even the name is frightening) belongs in your wardrobe. If you're not completely sold, but willing to try them, go for a basic color - gray, black or dark brown.
6. Tall boots. (Have & kind of Want) Have and love in brown, but certainly could use in black for more formal occasionsicon.
I wouldn't suggest getting carried away with super-tall, over-the-knee gems (unless that's your bag), but skirts are big this season and you'll want/need something to protect your legs from the elements.

7. Evening. (Have/Want/Always Need) Need something in the way of metallic.
Nothing is more festive then a metallic slingback for fall fetes. Let go of the mantra that evening is seasonless. You will need/want something for fall.
