Closet Greatness
Having spent a good deal of time in the coat closet analyzing the appropriately odd, yet somewhat endearing behavior of she she me's sound-alike, it came to me that a well-stocked closet is essential to one's fashion success. You would think such an obvious conclusion would have hit me long before now and that I wouldn't have to be teetering on my latest obsession in an actual closet to realize the importance of its contents. A fabulous closet will hands down make sure you never leave the house (or room) poorly dressed. Second, (and maybe more importantly) you never know when people will be socializing in your closet (case in point) and you always want to put your best label forward.

I have to admit, I'm somewhat of a closet lover of closets. I'm one of those friends that will run a quick and undetected eye over someone's closet while visiting them at home. I've always loved the articles in Bazaar that detail who will have what in their closet that season. Who hasn't tried finding a touch of Marc Jacobs in a B-Rep pencil? (If you haven't done the whole, "how can I get this look with what's in my closet," you've missed out on a great seasonal exercise. I highly recommend it.)

Anyway, I'm also way into closet shaping and redefining because I've had a total lag in shopping. What is it with the middle of the summer? I've got enough bikinis to last half a month on a beach, more than enough frocks to dress a garden party and all the colorful tanks my heart desires. It's true that fall is absolutely to die for, but who can think tweed and brocade when terry is too heavy already? And since a month without shopping could be career suicide, I thought rounding out my closet may be just the excuse I needed to hit the shops and get back into my groove.

The way to closet completeness:

  • A trench. From Hepburn to Hudson, come rain or shine, it's a feminine classic and deserves a prominent spot on your rack.
  • Dynamite black pants.
  • White jeans. They're a staple in American style. Finally, fashion and patriotism mix. (Buying white jeans can be tricky, so it's important to take along a trained and honest friend. Pocket/panty outline is bad, smooth/line-free derriere is good ;they should fit you to a "T" or forget about them.)
  • The dress. Drinks, dinner, dancing; whatever the event, every girl needs at least one va-va-voom dress.
  • The go-to dress. Because real life exists between the dinners and dancing. Top it with a scarf and shades and it's your signature SSS (Saturday Shopping Spree) attire.
  • Denim icon is back and bluer than ever. Am in total patriotic frame of mind and am currently channeling Lauren Bush and all her American chic.
  • A chic coat. Down with Love made us realize what sage fashionistas had always known - the outside is just as important as what is on the inside. Anything 3/4 length and over-the-top feminine is perfect for many falls to come.
  • A smattering of well-made T's and tanks. (We adore Petit Bateau for casual and C & C California for a funkier version.)
  • Sassy boots (for work, for play, for day and for night).
  • Interesting jewels. My latest obsession is the Memory Maker bracelet. Its the chicest way to show off your favorite images. (I'm proudly displaying my favorites for fall.) Pictured right, $60, www.memorymakerbracelet.com.

And not to be forgotten is the linen closet. You'll need crisp sheets and fluffy towels that are sure to impress any guest. Accessorize your closet (yes, they need it too) with Dyptique candles and decadent bubble bath. Like I mentioned before - you never know when a closet summit may take place or who will be in attendance.

Until next time, this is Shop Girl with Style Scoop signing off (or whatever ole TB says). That was purely for she she me's amusement. Here's wishing you a well-rounded wardrobe and well-stocked closets.
