The Fabulous Fall Forward
If you're
anything like me, at the beginning of each season, you'll look into
your closet and decide that there's nothing in there that you would
even consider wearing. Thus, begins our seasonal shopping spree of trying
to remember what (if anything) in our closet is still chic, while frantically
tearing through the pages of our favorite fashion
mags. To help ward off that kind of insanity (shopping should be
therapeutic, right?), I've decided that we should develop a plan of
attack before we hit the stores. First establish your fall look. (I'm
going with lady-like chic, but with a bit of an edge.)
Then take inventory of your closet. (Nothing, nothing and still nothing.)
Then, after much deliberation (not desperation) we should head out to
the shops. I advise that the journey begin sometime next month, as not
all fall styles have reached the stores yet, meaning that only icky
summer stuff on sale remains.
To help us be extra
chic for fall I've chatted with some of my most trusted fashion know-it-alls
and gotten the skinny on what 'everygirl' should have for fall.
"You've got
to have something tweed; it is the fabric for fall. However, be sure to
pair it with a really feminine piece- it will take away the man-ish look
to it. Also, don't be afraid of color; fall's hues are bright and vibrant.
This season is all about pairing old with new, so look deep into your
closet (and maybe even your mother's) before you head to the stores."
Wardrobe Adviser
"You should
either go big (as in knee-high
boot) or small (as in ballet flat) with your footwear. Over all there's
more structure and femininity
to shoes this season. And be sure to do the whole tights look with your
pumps and minis." Shoe Guru and Retail Therapist
*I should tell you that after firmly insisting over-the-knee is not and
will never be my thing, he admitted that last year's round-toe pumps were
fashionably permissible - if only slightly.
Here's what is on
my wish list:
1. A fitted tweed
jacket.
2. Flats.
Don't be afraid to ditch the heels for some equally sexy slip-ons. Try
ballet
for the weekend and pointed Ferragamos
for work. If you can't fathom life without a heel,
don't fret; turns out your spectators from last fall are still chic.
3. Colorful
tights. A bright hue adds some sass to a plain fall suit. Can also
wear them with pencil skirt from last fall.
4.
The White Shirt. It's a wardrobe must and an outfit-anxiety reliever.
5. A lingerie-inspired cami.
Think YSL
but on a budget.
6. Jeans.
Would it be fall without a new pair from the latest denim line?
7. Skinny
(as in leg) Pants. To wear with my flats.
8. A Mini. The high hemline is huge for fall and an easy way to go mod.
9. Something in a skin (preferably
croc).
10. To accessorize I want long leather gloves, a structured
bag and a dramatic strand of pearls.
Thanks to their insight,
my fall shopping guide is coming together rather chic-ly.
And the good news is, some of it is already in my closet! Turns out it's
not necessary to invest in a completely new wardrobe - who knew? Of course,
I'll sit it out for a month before I make any purchases; I prefer to shop
for fall in cooler weather.
