Pre In-Between

It's the 'pre in-between' time for fashion and accessories. It's too cold for spring styles and still too early for transition florals. But with six more weeks of winter, who wants to continue in black on black everyday? Fear not, because there is a way to mix some spring color and style into your winter wardrobe. However, as with all things in fashion there is a code to follow.

  1. Remember what month it is. This is the most important rule to abide by during this non-season season. No one should be wearing bright, big florals or open-toe mules in February.
  2. Don't overdo it. Spring pieces are to be added gradually. It's all a balancing act. If you wear a skirt, keep it in season with a sweater. Same with your fail-safe black pants; pair them with lighter top and layer with your blazer.
  3. Add accents to your outfit through accessories. It's easier and safer to jump to the next season with earrings and bags than it is with a full-on outfit ensemble. Tie a printed scarf around your neck or be fashionably brave and wear it as a do-rag. A little adventurous I know, but Jackie O. was very successful with this look. I picture it done with skinny black pants and a fitted black tee. So Capri!

I've checked with some of the 'fashionistas about town' and here's what they have named as some pre-spring must-haves. Remember these are to be mixed into your wardrobe gradually.

"The pencil skirt is still the 'it' piece. It was fall's biggest hit and now for spring the colors are lighter and the hemlines are shorter, but not too short. It's perfect for mixing with sweaters and button downs now and will be dynamite the rest of the season with just about anything," It girl.

"This season you see all of the girly prints and full skirts paired with little cardigans. Not your mother's cardigan though; these are sweet but still sexy, made from romantic cashmere in candy hues and embellished with vintage buttons. Milly makes the cutest ones. They are fresh and springy, but very warm, which is good for now," Sweet girl.

"Hands down, every season, every year you've got to get the newest jeans. They're a practical first purchase and can be worn with anything, including those big sweaters we're still forced to wear. For spring, denim is all about embellishment; zippers, pockets, even beading. If you're not able to get into all of that, at least get a pair in a pale wash. They look sleek even with black," Denim girl.

And what do I hail as the pre-spring must-have? Why, cargo pants, of course. We tried them on in the fall, but can't live without them for spring. Whether they're cropped or full, satin or twill, girly colors or army green, they are it for pre-spring, spring and summer. Pull out yours from fall and pair them with a pale sweater and heels; you'll be the picture of pre-spring glamour. I'll of course be back with more new looks for cargos as temperatures move upward.
