Surviving the
Holidays
It doesn't matter where you're going nor with whom,
at some point during the holidays we all need a little help. Whether
it be in the form of a quiet respite with a book (and a mug of cocoa
and a plate of sugar cookies) or in the form of a comfy pair of
slippers, that little boost could make the difference between holidays
and hell-idays.
As everyone
is likely to start the season this week with a trip to see family
and friends, we thought it may be helpful for you to have a cheat
sheet of ways to make the season a jolly one.
Movies to
See:
Bridget
Jones: The Edge of Reason - A brilliant follow-up to our favorite
heroine's first adventures into dating, love and hilariously large
underpants. And after staring at turkey and carbs all day, Mark
Darcy is quite a sight for sore eyes.
Spanglish
- Adam Sandler in a serious role? This touching movie promises laughter
and tears.
The
Polar Express - The classic Holiday tale comes to life. Well,
sort of. Younger family members will love this heartwarming animated
film. You will probably love it too.
Ocean's
Twelve - They're back with a super-cool Euro heist and super-glam
Catherine Zeta-Jones. A good flick for you and your beau.
Meet the
Fockers - Thought your family was weird?
Ray
- This powerful film about the late, great Ray Charles is a must-see
for the fam. Jamie Foxx is Ray Charles. The soundtrack
is equally fabulous.
Books to
Travel With:
I
Am Charlotte Simmons by Tom Wolfe - In typical Thomas Wolfe
style - naive eroticism reaches new heights.
The
Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans - Read with a box of Kleenex.
The
Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler - For every girl that
ever wanted to be Emma, Elizabeth (loved by Mr. Darcy) or Elinor.
The
Other Side of the Story by Marion Keys - Always in need of some
Brit chic lit.
Music to
Groove To:
Bridget
Jones Soundtrack - Pop music lovers will delight in this upbeat
soundtrack.
Destiny
Fullfilled: Destiny's Child - The gang's all here. 'Bout time
these girls got back together and made some music.
A
Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay - If Gwynnie loves them.
. . This soulful CD is great for driving, cocktailing or unwinding;
perfect pretty much anytime.
Elephunk,
Black Eyed Peas - When you just need to dance.
Now
That's What I Call Christmas - 'Tis the season, you know.
Suitcase Survival:
Cozy
slippers - Your cold tootsies will thank you.
Pajamas
- Leave the old T at home; holidays with the fam call for flannel
PJ's.
Cable
knit sweater - Its important to always look put together whether
reading by the fire or playing touch football.
Lip
salve/balm/gloss
- Don't neglect your lips while away. It's cold outside and your
pucker needs to be protected - mistletoe season is upon us. Smith's
Rosebud Salve
is our fave.
