Spring Style
I just love my job! Although it is one of those jobs that is difficult to explain in twenty words or less. Whenever my grandmother asks what it is I do, I am often at a loss for a credible explanation! But one of the quite-often-enjoyed-perks is the ability to work from home whenever my boss is out of town, which has been quite a lot lately. While she is off doing whatever it is that Chic Professional Execs do in Barbados, Fiji and Costa Rica, I get to sleep in late, take my laptop to the corner bistro, order a croissant and something hot and frothy and pretend that I am in Central Perk with the cast of Friends (I know, I know, but it's just so hard to move on). So when my boss told me she had to nip on over to Milan for a week I decided to take advantage of this sudden somewhat flexible schedule. This would be the perfect time to implement my new Spring into Spring plan. It actually started out as my Sprint into Spring plan (with swimsuit season just around the corner I felt it wise to add a bit of aerobic conditioning to my daily schedule), and I had the best of intentions, truly I did. I even awoke with the birds this morning (those specific aviary specimens that arise somewhere around 9:00 a.m.), donned my new exercise togs and headed out into the bonny bright sunshine for a little jog around the park. Spring, however, is a fickle creature and no sooner had I hit my stride (even sound more fit, no?) than the once-clear sky filled with ominous dark clouds, a light drizzle began (which soon became a drenching downpour) and I found myself soaked and shivering, dodging mud puddles and lightening bolts and taking cover in a smelly bus shelter till the worst had passed. Needless to say, from now on I'll get my workout while watching Fit TV from the warmth and safety of my snuggly four-poster bed!
Anyhoo, I'm all cozy now, (took a cab home--rain + suede = BAD; although cows are basically suede and they don't get all streaky and shrunken in the rain; but I digress) and after a nice hot soak in the tub I'm ready to revamp and revitalize my Spring into Spring plan. For the best of the best of everything Spring, grab your notepad and play along with me:
Spring Indulgences/Necessities:
- Platforms. The hottest of the hot spring footwear. Delicate strappy leather, sophisticated pump, ankle-wrap espadrille or a sexy peep-toe. Practice walking in them a bit--one tends to underestimate the amount of sole beneath one's foot, which could end one up on one's rear end if one is not careful!
- A flared or full skirt. An absolute must-have this season. Replaces last year's tiered and flounced bohemian look with a bit more sophistication, yet still flirty enough for Spring. Wear with a soft wrap sweater or simple tailored jacket.
- A pencil skirt. I know, I just told you to run out and buy a full skirt, but while you're at it, pick up a great pencil skirt too. This little wonder can be bumped up a notch to professional chic, or toned down for the weekend. Looks great with t-straps and fun flats.
- Cropped jacket. Pair this with a longer tee and cropped trousers for a fabulous spring look. The military look is also hot.
- Bermudas are back! Love the longer length shorts (read: cellulite). Also, rolled and/or cuffed denim or twill is perfect for spring. Paired with either a fun polo, or perhaps a girly blouse for a fetching fashion statement.
- The perfect handbag. With so many style choices this season your options are wide open. Pay attention to details like handles, buckles and trim. Glamorous and elegant or trendy and casual, a great bag can add that final cachet to make an ensemble sing!
Spring Movies:
- Failure to Launch. If you haven't seen it yet--GO!!! SJP is as stylish and chic as ever (reruns of S&TC are only partially satisfying--love to see things au courant à la SJP in the fashion department). I would go for the ensembles alone, but Matthew
McConaughey
is a total bonus--love that gold-ole-boy Southern charm! (Those über-white teeth made me wince every time I sipped my icy soda however!) Critics gave it a yawn, but I loved it! (And, I readily admit, I am easily entertained and happy to be so.)
- Thank You For Smoking. Aaron Eckhart as a spin doctor/lobbyist for Big Tobacco. This guy could sell hot chocolate in Hades and have people lining up for it too. The film has been dubbed a "satire both savage and elegant" as well as "smart, soulless and utterly charming".
- Inside Man. Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster--now that is a cinematic tour de force. Add to that Clive Owen (even if he is The Man in the Nylon Mask for the entire film) and his oh-so-sexy Brit voice and this is a heist movie with brains, heart, moxy and an actually entertaining plot line! A hit with viewers.
DVD's to Watch Over and Over and Over While it Rains/Snows/Blows Outside:
- Pride and Prejudice. Love, love love it. Keira Knightley is a feisty Elizabeth, (proving that you don't necessarily need cleavage to have a heaving bosom) and
Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy is spot on! Rosamund Pike plays Jane to cool, blonde perfection (remember her from Die Another Day?) and Brenda Blethyn's Mrs. Bennett is adorably and infuriatingly endearing. Definitely risk wearing out this DVD.
- In Her Shoes.
Cameron Diaz, as flirty, flaky good-time-girl Maggie and Toni Collette as her plain, staid lawyer sister, Rose. The only thing they seem to have in common is shoe size. Toss in a never-known-about-till-recently grandmother, played by Shirley McLaine and this is a hilarious, moving and rewarding family comedy--with really great footwear!
- Grey's Anatomy. The first nine episodes of season one (all 386 minutes!). The most addicting hospital drama since George Clooney left ER. This is the perfect companion for a long, rainy afternoon.
Best of the Best Chic Lit:
- Three Weeks With My Brother, by Nicholas Sparks.
A must-read for Sparks fans as well as a treat for those who want to find out what makes a family strong. A sort of travelogue about a three week trip around the world with his brother, Micah, as well as reminiscences of their boyhood and growing-up-together years.
- Speechless, by
Yvonne Collins & Sandy Rideout. A fun, quick read about a statuesque (read: six-foot-tall) political wordsmith who happens to be very good at catching bridal bouquets but has a paralyzed love life. Fun insight into office and government politics.
- Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark. Once again the mistress of mystery is at her very best in this chilling tale of kidnapping, murder and telepathy. A must for dyed-in-the-wool Higgins Clark fans!
- Hitched: A Regan Reilly Mystery by Carol Higgins Clark. This daughter-of-another-famous-mystery-writer has proven that she can certainly hold her own with the written word and the twisted plot. A great curl-up-by-the-fire read!
