Best of Spring: Handbags
Once again I have arrived at work having experienced a major wardrobe malfunction. (Luckily it did not involve the exposing of my nether-regions à la Britney, nor the flashing of my frontal lobes à la Janet Jackson.) One would think that having lived on the left coast for quite some time now, I would have the temperamental nature of said region ingrained (or embrained as Kim would say) in my memory, realizing that just because the sun is shining brightly in the morning sky doesn't mean there won't be wind/torrential rain/pounding hail by lunchtime. And even though these squalls often zip right through, they tend fill every pothole and gutter with muddy, mucky water.
After my wild and crazy lunchtime weatherfest of a few weeks ago I have been playing it safe in the wardrobe department, following the cardinal rule of Bay Area late winter/early spring attire: layers! Tunics, tights and ankle boots. Trousers, tanks and sweaters. And the occasional flirty dress, but always tempered with a chic jacket or sweater. And always, always, the ubiquitous umbrella. Like my AmEx, I never leave home without it. (Tough lesson learned after being caught sans said bumbershoot one-too-many-times.)
Anyhoo, as it is officially the first day of spring I thought it safe to debut a fabulous new spring ensemble. And the weather was cooperating quite nicely: blue skies, fluffy tiny white clouds, sun shining brightly, even the birds were singing. If I didn't know better I would think I was in a Disney movie. So I donned my spring finery: gorgeously girly sleeveless top, adorably flirty circle skirt and the fabulous new suede peep toe pumps that I have been positively gasping to wear. I completed the ensemble with a polished handbag and a stack of bangles on my wrist. And, just to play it safe, I added my Michael Kors trench coat… just in case. I must admit that I looked quite fetching! And I was feeling particularly sassy as I sashayed my way across the street to the office, nimbly leaping over aforementioned muddy mucky pothole and landing gracefully on sidewalk. Whereupon I immediately caught the heel of my stylish shoe in the sewer grate and snapped it right off. Which sent me reeling across the sidewalk, arms cartwheeling like mad to keep my balance and handbag flying off my shoulder and directly into the muddy mucky pothole. Oh for heavens sake, I've already lost one suede pump there is no way I am sacrificing my handbag too! I made a mad dive toward the puddle, yanking my bag out with a fierce flourish, spewing the contents of said handbag all over the sidewalk. (And lest you think my girly unmentionables were displayed on the sidewalk for all the world to see, I already learned that lesson darlings — those particulars were safely and stylishly tucked into this adorable little mini-bag. Which, however, was now in danger of being trampled.) I quickly scrambled to gather all of my goodies together and stuff them into my bag before standing up, brushing myself off and striding purposefully into the office. As well as one can stride in a pair of heels-minus-one-heel. Yes, it's all about grace under pressure.
While my heels obviously failed me, my handbag totally rocked!
