Summer's Most Wearable Trends

You know the best thing about summer? Besides the fabulously flippy little sundresses and strappy sandals? And day after day of glorious sunshine and clear, cloudless blue skies? And the several extra hours of sunlight at the end of a workday? Well, the best thing about summer is being able to take advantage of those extra hours of sunlight at the end of a workday by having dinner under a cloudless blue sky with your best gal pals in your flippy little sundress and strappy sandals! Which is exactly what I did this past weekend. And while we were all relaxing and sipping icy cold beverages at an adorable little sidewalk bistro, I experienced a moment of intuitive insight and pure understanding: food actually tastes better when one is dining in a flippy little sundress and sassy sandals! Truly it does! Don't believe me? Try it this weekend. Slip into your sassiest sundress, strap on your sexiest summer sandals and dine alfresco in the warm summer air. (It also helps to go to a three star restaurant, but Ruth's Chris Steak House will do in a pinch.) But I digress...

Anyhoo, the gang was all there: Girly, Pretty Mama, Shop Girl (in town for the weekend) and yours truly. We were sitting around the table, relaxing after our oh-so-scrumptious meal and doing what we über-stylish girls do best: fashionista spotting. I am not one to brag (who? moi?). Individually, my posse of fabulous fashionista friends do many, many, many things quite well, but collectively we are unsurpassed as trend spotters. Ombre? Girly had that one nailed a full season in advance. Gladiator sandals? Shop Girl was sporting Givenchy before they left the runway in Milan. And let's not forget this season's hottest ticket — the gorgeous maxi dress. Who do you think was the instigator of this trend? Yes, it was me. Well, to be honest, I had just bought the most gorgeous mod boho print dress, but it was a bit on the long side (quite a bit actually) and I was running really late because my manicurist had overbooked (again), so by the time I made it to my tailor's shop she was already closed for the weekend. Can you imagine me owning a spanking new gorgeous mod boho print dress and waiting an entire weekend to wear it? I thought not. Anyhoo, I figured I would just pair said gorgeous dress with my sassiest pair of skyscrapers, which I did, and voilà! A trend is born! Once again, I digress…

Anyhoo, trendspotting is fabulous fun. We always like to make up little stories about the stylishly clad people that we spot. For instance, the statuesque blonde in the khaki shorts, flirty white blouse and wedge sandals is just ashore from her private vessel, which is docked at the Yacht Club, and is doing a quick spot of swimsuit shopping before heading down to coast to Catalina Island for the weekend. And the gorgeous brunette with the killer legs, sitting across the pavilion in the sundress, sandals and floppy hat, worked her way through college as an exotic dancer, and is now an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Stanford. And since it was such a glorious summer day we just lingered longer over our lemonade and put together a fabulous list of this summer's most wearable trends:

White. (And how to wear it.) White is a classic summer statement. From white denim to the perfect little white dress, this is the shade to usher in summer. The key to wearing white is to know when enough is enough. Head to toe white screams, "here comes the bride!" Cinch your white shirtwaist with a funky brass belt, slip into a pair of metallic heels and finish with a sassy snakeskin satchel. (No one will mistake you for the bride again!) Pair your white denims with a summery little tank and top with a retro blazer. Finish with a pair of espadrilles and you are good to go!

Brights: One of my favorite trends this season. (Makes me feel like I am on a Caribbean holiday!) The best thing about brights is you can find the perfect hue for your particular skin tone. Slip into a glorious grape sundress in a comfy knit, strap on a pair of chic sandals and finish with some dangles and bangles and you are ready for an afternoon of window shopping. Or try a flirty little electric blue suntop, worn with crisp white shorts or capris. Slip into a pair of flirty flats and hit the boardwalk baby!

Fabulous Florals: Gorgeous floral prints are gracing everything from sundresses to sandals and swimsuits to scarves. The fabrics are lightweight, cool and airy. Pair your country-girl sundress with flat sandals for a Saturday morning trip to the Farmer's Market. Your coolest designer jeans will be that much cooler with a trapeze top and wedges.

The New Boho: A little more subtle than the flouncy prairie skirts and boots of a few seasons ago. The new boho look is a bit more playful; colors and graphics range from delicate to bold, from florals to ethnic ikat prints. The gladiator sandal absolutely complements this look.

Retro Feminine With an Edge: Think Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. Gorgeous full skirts, fitted tops and a sexy pair of peep-toe pumps. Slim capri's, a gorgeous figure flattering top and a great pair of skimmers. A gorgeous sleeveless shift dress paired with classic slingback pumps. Fabulously feminine with just a touch of continental charm.

Happy summer shopping dearest friends!
