Six Summer Style Must-Haves

Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it! That's a little tidbit of advice my grandmother used to give me when I would start in on my summer wish list of longer days (more hours of sunlight ended up meaning more chores around the yard), a new party dress and my first pair of real heels (which were both ruined when I tripped in said heels and ended up in the pool) or my very own pony (hours and hours of mucking out stalls, brushing out cockle burrs and another pair of torn jeans every time I got tossed. Which was often.) So you'd think I would learn my lesson by now. No such luck. I have been whining about the cold and dreary weather for weeks (if not months) now, bemoaning the fact that my sundresses and sandals remain in the closet while my cashmere is sadly overworked.

Well, just this week the temps went from 60° to 100° in two days! Needless to say, I was thrilled beyond belief the first day…balmy weather in the high 70's, perfect for an afternoon bistro lunch in a flippy little skirt and top and a great pair of sassy sandals. Not to mention a pleasant little evening stroll along the pier in this season's ultra-chic halter dress and pretty platforms. But by the next day I was absolutely melting! A girl usually gets a little lead time on the über-toasty weather, no? Suffice it to say that pit-stains do not become a twirty girl. (Note to self: invest in more 100% cotton and silk for wilting weather!) A girl usually has the opportunity to ease into the warmer weather. You know, several weeks of toting along the requisite umbrella and cashmere sweater, wearing pumps and feeling brave by sporting peep toes and thinking twice before going the full monty with strappy sandals. Not to mention a few sessions at the spa for toning and spray tanning before donning those shoulder and leg baring styles. Therefore I was caught just a tad off guard when the temps skyrocketed into the triple digits. I have been slathering my winter-weary skin with a rich body butter in the hopes of staving off the crocodile scales on my legs, but as the mercury climbed, my yummy body butter melted into rivulets that ran down my bare legs and into my Jimmy Choo's. My elegant coiffure ended up in a ponytail, (albeit a very chic ponytail, as I followed Girly's instructions on wrapping a strand of hair around the elastic band—trés Jennifer Garner!) And my once-chic blouse is wilting on a hanger, awaiting resurrection at the dry cleaner (aforementioned pit staiDonna Riccons).

So I did what any sensible twirty girl in similar circumstances would do. I left work early (I was doing no one any favors by staying at the office and representing myself and my employer with such flagrant disregard to style and personal hygiene) and went back to my nicely air conditioned condo to hole up with a stack of glossy mags and very, very tall icy beverage.

And thus refreshed I embarked on a glorious quest. Darling girls, after much diligent search and perusal I have narrowed my summer style essentials down to six basic wishes/wants/needs/necessities:

Stylish Sundress. So many dresses, so little time! Am positively aglow with the thought of attending summer weddings in stylish halter dresses. Or a sunny weekend driving my little convertible through the wine country of Sonoma in the perfect sundress and a pair of sassy shades. This season's sundresses run the gamut from girly girl to fabulously flirty, from sleek and chic to drop dead gorgeous. And the little white dress is quickly replacing the LBD as the go-to gown for evening. Be sure to add a bit of bling! Check out the fabulous styles at Karen Curtis. Gorgeous!

Strappy Sandals. The perfect accompaniment to any sundress or skirt. You can even wear sandals to the office these days (if you are lucky enough to work in a more stylishly progressive environment!), just keep them within the realms of proper business attire. Nothing too overtly sexy. Sandals with substantial heels and wider straps are ideal, as is a sleek platform. For weekend wear, a pair of sexy t-straps or a sassy little espadrille is perfection, and this pair of carved heel wedges is sublime! And for party time I'm all about skyscrapers!

Sassy, Sexy Flirty Tops. Once again, so many gorgeous styles, so little time! If you have great shoulders go with a modified halter top or racerback style blouse. Sexy sleeveless tops and shimmery tanks look fabulous too, especially if you have been doing those bicep curls and tricep dips! Sheers are also very hot this summer—featherlight fabrics which float and skim your shape. And don't miss out on the gorgeous one shoulder styles.

Essential Crops. And you thought crops were just for weekend wear! Try a great pair of sleek crops or perhaps a pair of pinstriped gabardine for work, or a dressier pair for an evening out. They are also perfect for casual Friday. A pair of relaxed, rolled-at-the-cuff crops makes a great beach look, especially when slipped on over a bikini. But my all time fave for summer is a pair of crisp, white denims.

Go Anywhere Handbag. Roomy enough for all your girly essentials, but not so big as to be mistaken for airline carry-on. From an unstructured artisan bag for casual excursions to a sleek and chic patent leather when you need to bump up the volume.

Flirty Flats. Let's face it girls, as much as I adore a great pair of heels, there are times when I feel like a fabulous pair of flats is the way to go. I just love a pair of sassy sneaks paired with capri's or cropped jeans. And an adorable pair of t-straps looks fab with a flirty little cotton skirt. This summer I am going to grab a great pair of gladiators to wear with shorts and tees.

Well darling girls, I feel so much better! I am calm, cool and have collected a fabulous list of goodies to search for this weekend! Oh, and before I head out to the air conditioned mall in my air conditioned car, I have one thing left to do to wrap up winter, and I suggest you do the same. Stuff your gorgeous boots with these fabulous Booty Shapers! A fabulous little invention from Down Under— inflatable boot supports that will keep your boots free from folds and creases and fully locked and loaded for fall. Happy hot shopping girly girls!
