Top Summer Style Essentials
Have had a wildly crazy-hectic work week and was totally looking forward to a relaxing and refreshing weekend—sleeping in, brunch at my favorite little café armed with stacks of glossy magazines for summer fashion recon (it's never too early to start scouting for figure flattering dresses) and a leisurely stroll to the shoppes to check out window displays in anticipation of said summer fashion recon (flirty skirts are hot!) Next, the possible (probable, more like) purchase of a pair of this season's hottest sandals as a pre-summer fashion recon kickoff; and while I'm at it, an oh-so-divine little dress wouldn't go amiss (positively adore that white grecian confection from Sparrow Clothing—makes me feel like an absolute goddess). And finally, to cap off a fabulously refreshing weekend of perfection, a lovely little bistro dinner with my gorgeous beau Seth (immediately recouping cost of floaty dress; subsequent recategorization of said floaty dress from "expense" to "investment". Very, very good investment!)
Had just returned from late lunch and found office in complete whirl of confusion and chaos, message light blinking frantically and computer screen plastered with "SEE ME NOW!" and "MY OFFICE IMMEDIATELY!" Post-its. Quick cell phone check: battery dead. Again. (Oops.) Raced to mentor/boss's office, wildly wondering if I had emailed last weekend's swimsuit shopping photos to corporate headquarters by mistake (which would mean that this month's Pipeline Updates went to Shop Girl) and praying that if that were indeed the case, I had left out the one in the burgundy maillot—the neckline really is a bit too plunging and once a girl reaches her twirties she definitely needs proper support for the girls. Besides, the color is completely wrong for my complexion, it makes my legs look like sausages and it does absolutely nothing for my hips. Am leaning a bit toward a totally retro hipster suit which makes me feel like Uma Thurman with dark hair, but not the Pulp Fiction dark bob, just a gorgeous coppery-brown like mine…but I digress.
Anyhoo, reached mentor/boss's office to find her calmly tucking files into the most gorgeous rich buttery leather bag (did I mention how stylish she is?) and issuing a string of instructions to two of her assistants, when she looked up and said, "Oh good, you're back She She. Listen, I know you probably had plans for the weekend, but Jayne just phoned—apparently she's allergic to Botox and her face is the size of a watermelon—so I really could use your help in New York. I am so, so sorry for the last minute notice, but I promise, I'll take care of everything. Grab your laptop and handbag and we'll talk on the way to the airport."
And that, my dearest girls, is how I find myself happily ensconced in a very lovely hotel overlooking bright lights big city, surrounded by stacks of glossy mags to aid in my one-day-apparel-and-accessory-assault on the heaven that is Fifth Avenue (and nearby)! Can you say expense account?! Oh, the sacrifices made in the name of career advancement…
She She's Fabulous Summer Style Search
This little NYC junket is strictly for business; however, that business happens to include a quick jaunt up to Bridgeport for a pre-Memorial Day bash with some of the corporate higher-ups and their significant others. So not only do I need business appropriate attire, I also need a few sporty-casual ensembles for the picnic/sailing/BBQ/schmoozefest. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me!
Work Attire:
- A fabulous pencil skirt. Not too tight (must be able to sit down without hearing r-r-r-rip!, feeling a draft, and knowing that my Hanky Panky's are most likely now on display). Should perhaps opt for one with just the teeniest bit of stretch.
- A gorgeous blouse. Perfect under a demure jacket or sweater (chilly air conditioned offices!) but is feminine and flirty enough for evening.
- A pair of tailored trousers and a chic white blouse. Always a classic and can be combined with so many other pieces.
- Edgy city shorts. Will be perfect for client meeting; in fact, will most likely be heralded as very cutting-edge fashionista, girl most likely to head up next project. Especially when paired with great swing jacket. Oh, and a really precious pair of pumps.
- To-die-for shoes. Have had my eye on these stylish lace-ups forever, and they are the hottest item for fall. I know, it's barely summer, but these are totally year-round work shoes, and are therefore justifiably smart purchase.
- A girly top. Can be worn under a belted blazer for work, then paired with capris and peeptoes for play.
- A sleeveless sheath dress. For the business day, layering will pull this look together—white blouse worn under, cropped jacket worn over. For evening, the sheath alone with a gorgeous long necklace and strappy skyscrapers.
- Accessories darlings! Will need to keep it fairly simple here, as I do have a tendency to go a bit overboard with the handbags and jewelry, and I somehow have the feeling that a charge on my corporate Visa card to Tiffany's would not go over too well. Think I'll pick up a funky little necklace and earrings that will go well from work to evening. Perhaps a bracelet to break up the monotony of the white blouse/tailored trousers ensemble. And a great little all-purpose bag for after hours use.
Play Attire:
- Great pair of white capris or crops, nautical top and warm jacket for our little sailing adventure. Learned my lesson the hard way as far as yacht-appropriate footwear goes (nothing that will mar the deck!) so I know just what to look for. Fun little straw tote for sunscreen, shades, impressive reading material and iPod.
- Gorgeous sundress (not too bare) for the picnic, lightweight sweater in case of breezy conditions, comfy yet stylish wedges or flat sandals (heels tend to sink into the grass and trip a girl up) and the tiniest bit of edgy bling for fun.
- Sporty-chic skirt for the BBQ. Wedges or espadrilles (heels and grass again!) and a brightly patterned blouse (in case I drop chicken salad in my lap. Again.) Slim bangles to complete the ensemble.
Things I Just Might Need (You never know)
- A great pair of jeans. That's a given. Dress them up, dress them down, you'll look sassy all over town!
- A fun summer tunic. One that I can layer over a tank top and pair with my new jeans, then throw on over my swimsuit once the weather gets seriously summer.
- Nifty espadrilles. They'll look great with skirts, crops and even another new pair of jeans!
Goodness how time flies when one is mentally spending someone else's money! Hmmm, may have to rethink a few of these "expenditures". Perhaps can justify them on basis of post-tramatic-travel-stress-syndrome. After all, when one flies 2,500 miles without so much as a toothbrush that is pretty stressful! Must dash while the shops are open…smile pretty and try not to break too many hearts!
