Valentine's Day Gift Guide

It's here again. Well, actually it's just around the corner, but where Valentine's Day is concerned you can never shop too early right? Valentine's Day is one of those holidays where choosing just the right gift can get a bit tricky. Everything depends upon just where along the relationship scale you fall. Or to be more precise, it depends upon the individual perception of both parties involved when it comes to determining the exact point upon said relationship scale either and/or both parties agree to. Or if, in fact, one has even set foot upon said relationship scale. Case in point:

A few years ago I was in a relationship. At least I thought I was in a relationship. I had been introduced to one of my girlfriend's coworkers at a party a few months earlier and we really connected. We had the same interests, worked in similar industries, both had dogs and both liked to dump peanut M&M's into the extra large box of popcorn at the movies. We even liked the same movies! (Well, kind of, since we always seemed to go see the latest action thrillers.) We were at the point where we were meeting for lunch, going out every weekend and spending quite a bit of time together during the week as well. He had even seen me all sweaty glowing from Zumba class.

So, Valentine's Day rolls around and I get all warm and fuzzy thinking about the gorgeous bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates and perhaps even a little something sparkly that I am certain will be headed my way. I spend hours searching for just the right Valentine's Day card for my new beau, and I lay out $$$ for some quite excellent Bose earbuds since he loves to listen to tunes when he goes jogging. I invest in a truly gorgeous dress and some stunning skyscrapers and spend the afternoon primping and prepping for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner…

He shows up an hour late, in jeans and a tee shirt, carrying a pizza and 6-pack of Pepsi. No flowers. No chocolates.$20 Off With Email Sign Up No sparklies. He has absolutely no idea that it is Valentine's Day. The holiday wasn't a total loss however — I am still enjoying those awesome Bose earbuds! Lesson learned.

Anyhoo, even though I am currently beau-less this V-Day I must say that I'm pretty happy. (I know, you're shocked and stunned, having become used to my usual frantic fits of anxiety and/or depression surrounding said holiday.) I've outgrown my usual Valentomb's mantra of a) if not sure of boyfriend status — stressing over whether or not I'd get flowers; b) if with boyfriend — stressing over whether or not bouquet-on-the-way would be a tacky carnation mix from the bucket outside the filling station or something more enviable; or c) if decidedly single — sending self tulips (the perfect bouquet — not too much, not too little) and watching co-workers turn green with envy. But no more. Now I'm just a regular person. A happy person. Content even

Which is why this weekend I am treating myself to a Girl's Weekend Away. Lest you think I have lost my ability to punctuate on command I stress that said Girl's Weekend Away is indeed singular, not plural, as all of my besties are currently involved in relationships with serious football fanatics, the culmination of which occurs this weekend. (Football, not relationship culmination I might add.) Therefore I am headed up the coast to enjoy the gorgeous spring-like weather and a little R & R.

Girls' Weekend Itinerary:

  • Define spring look. (sooo loving this spring's ladylike dresses!) Am meeting with Shop Girl next week to spring clean each other's closets and we agreed that we would each come equipped with Personal Look: An Upclose and Personal Definition of Self Style for Spring '11 so we'd know which existing wardrobe pieces would work and which would not. (She says I have to include documentation from magazines to support my looks as I sometimes get 'too creative'.)
  • Make list of things to purchase/aspire to purchase to complete spring look. Thus far, I only want to wear skirts that twirl and sassy sandals (mixing in the occasional dressy thong sandal from time to time) all summer. Have not addressed other wardrobe parts except that I must own this exquisite bag. Will give plasma to fund if necessary.
  • Give self facial and mani/pedi. Unless, of course, I find a fabulous day spa nearby at which point I will indulge and treat myself to a little early Valentine's Day present from the love of my life (me!)
  • Watch Steel Magnolias and cry hysterically. (One of the top ten movie scenes of all time is when Olympia Dukakis tries to get Sally Field to punch Shirley MacLaine. And I love it when Dolly says, 'Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.')
  • Watch Sleepless in Seattle. My Best Friend's Wedding. Love Actually.
  • Read fetching novel.

Girls' Weekend Grocery List: French bread (2 loaves, one per day); Brie — whole wheel, not just a wedge; enormous stash of delectable chocolate; six pack of Diet Pepsi, Peachy Penguins (yum!)

Well darlings, that does it for me! Happy week before Valentine's Day!
