How to Dress for Your Body Type
(Part 1 of 2)

Every fashionista worth her Fendi knows that black is slimming. It is a basic fact of life—Fashion 101—one that has been drilled into our souls since our little sausage bodies were encased in leotards and tights in Miss Betty's dance class. And we also know that a great pair of skyscrapers will not only add inches to the vertically challenged, but can also provide a confident little sashay to your step. We know it's perfectly OK to not match shoes and handbags. We also know that only the truly desperate-to-be-noticed dress in head-to-toe insignia. But there is still that vague and ambiguous hinterland that every women—even the most cutting-edge fashionista—stumbles into at one time or another. It happens every spring and every fall and is dissected and second-guessed and analyzed ad nauseum ad infinitum. I am talking about the dreaded "Hot New Trend".

Not everyone embraces the latest trends. No matter how, well, trendy they are. Some bodies were just not meant to wear certain styles. For instance, you will never catch me in a pair of drawstring trousers. Nor will I ever don ultra-low-rise jeans (I don't do crack), and under no circumstances will I ever wear anything with a tapered leg. That's not to say I won't, on occasion, try on certain trendy items. I have been known to strut the dressing area at Bloomies in a gorgeous gauzy maxi dress (didn't buy it, however; it looked like I was cavorting in my nightie) and I was temporarily tempted by a to-die-for pair of skyscrapers from Fendi (still pondering). A girl's head can so easily be turned!

We have all fallen prey to the Evil Sales Clerk (works on commission, fawns all over you, oozes false flattery and will most likely go on to become a politician). She gasps as you walk out of the dressing room attired in a bright floral bubble skirt, belted tunic top and ankle boots, exclaiming, "Darling! You look positively divine! Most girls could never pull off that look but with your unusual coloring/interesting hairstyle/overly athletic arms you really give it an edge!" (Yes, this is the clerk who also convinced you that high-waisted jeans with a tapered leg was a good look for you. WRONG! As mentioned previously, any jean with a tapered leg should be completely banned from production.) But I digress…

Anyhoo, so what's a twirty girl with a few, um, curves supposed to do when it comes to following the latest trends? Fear not, dearest girls, She She Me (and her team of style mavens) is here to help!

Four (or Five) Rules of Fashion Fit

  1. First thing to know, trends are not written in stone. Perhaps your favorite glossy mag is pitching spring's sporty nautical style, but horizontal stripes make you look like a linebacker and don't do a thing for your waistline (or lack thereof). No need to write it off completely dear girls! A gorgeous pair of trend-inspired wedges or pumps gives the perfect boost to a figure flattering dress, or great skirt and top. One of my favorite ensembles this spring is an elegant pair of navy twill trousers, a chic white blouse and great wedges. I then pull the whole look together with a stylish scarf tied around the handle of my new handbag, a fun necklace and a sporty jacket. Très nautical without being totally "Ahoy!" As far as trends go, I am a firm believer in the "less is more" aspect. For instance, this halter dress nails nautical all on it's own.
  2. Next, mixing fuller and slimmer silhouettes works! For instance, a fitted top will look best with a fuller skirt, or wide-leg trousers. And vice versa. A voluminous top looks fabulous with skinny jeans, or a trapeze dress looks oh-so-chic belted over tights. There is nothing less flattering than a girl poured into her clothing—tight jeans, tight top, stilettos…all you need to complete the whole Hooker on Parade look is bleached poufy hair, enormous earrings and really trashy lipstick! Then, again, equally unflattering is the Bag Lady look—oversize sweatshirt, droopy shapeless trousers, clunky shoes…don't make the mistake of thinking you can "hide" behind oversize clothing. It only serves to emphasize your lack of style.
  3. Your tailor is your best friend. You may wear a size 6 top and a size 10 skirt, but those shoulders you inherited from Grandma Jane look best in a size 12 jacket! Invest in clothing items that fit you well in your largest area, then have them tailored to fit everywhere. A jacket or blazer will look so much more flattering if it is tailored to skim over your curves instead of hanging off your shoulders or bulging at the buttons. And have your trousers professionally hemmed. They should hit 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the ground, while wearing shoes.
  4. Embrace your figure. Whether you are a 4, a 14 or a 24 there are so many great styles available for every shape. The funny thing is that most girls complain about a specific body part, perhaps a rear that is too round, legs that are too muscular, or skinny arms, but at the same time there is always another girl out there who is completely envious of what you have! So love yourself for who you are, dress for the body that you have—not the body that you wish you had—and always respect that gorgeous bod!
  5. And speaking of respecting one's body, respecting and pampering go hand in hand (natch) and I have discovered the most glorious lotions and potions to pamper myself with this spring. The fabulous skin care products from Skin Like Butter are everything the name says, and more. The Shea Oil Body Butter Scrub is positively luxurious, leaving your skin feeling fresh, clean and invigorated. I adore the Shea Oil Lotion (Fresh Laundry is my fave!), which is so thick and rich, yet melts into your skin leaving it soft and supple. You can even order samples of the different fragrances! And for She She Girls, you can get 10% off your order with the code "SheSheMe" at checkout! Again I digress…

Anyhoo, there are definitely ways to make the most of what you have, and take the emphasis away from what you want to minimize. So let's check out a few of spring's hot new trends and next week we will learn how to make them work for you!

On Safari

From neutral, yet über sleek khaki to glorious prints and exotic skins, the safari trend is everywhere this spring. If you aren't quite ready to go totally tribal, stick with the neutrals and add the exotics in bits and pieces with a fabulous handbag, luscious heels or fabulous jewelry.

Fabulous Florals

This spring's florals run the gamut from bright and bold to delicate pastels, from a veritable floral explosion to a few delicate blossoms, and nothing announces spring quite like a feminine frock. It's all about femininity, so embrace your inner girly girl and go with it! You can also incorporate the floral trend with wonderful wedges, sassy sandals, colorful totes and floral handbags.

The New Boho

I adore the boho look! And while the trend is still all about hippie prints and the hang-loose lifestyle, this season the whole package is a bit more sophisticated and a tad less oversized. Gorgeous macrame inspired tops, delicate floral print dresses and skirts, peasant style blouses, adorable tiered knit sundresses and floaty body skimming tunics all add up to a fabulous look. Accents like crochet trim and embroidery abound. Finish with woven sandals or platform wedges, toss a hand-tooled leather messenger bag over your shoulder and you are good to go!

Happy spring style shopping girls!
