Suddenly Single (But Still Chic!)
Yes, dearest girls, it's true. I find myself suddenly single. Again. Sometimes you see it coming and sometimes you are completely blind sided. I honestly thought things were going quite well between me and my erstwhile beau, Seth. Cozy bistro dinners, lovely lazy weekends sailing on his boat—he even went shopping with me and didn't mind holding my handbag while I tried on dresses! The perfect guy…(sigh)
To give him credit, he didn't really want to break up. It's a matter of logistics. Seth accepted an enviable offer to skipper a private yacht through the Mediterranean for several months, with the possibility of it becoming a permanent gig. And as much as I adore Greece (and Seth), the thought of spending weeks on end at sea, albeit aboard a lavish yacht and in the company of a gorgeous hunk, is just a bit too much for me to wrap my mind around right now. Am I supposed to just wave goodbye to my career? And my condo? And my friends? And my favorite pastime! (That thought alone is enough to give a girl pause.) Can you even imagine? No more quick trips to Saks for sassy dresses, Bloomies for hot handbags and Nordstrom for the latest designer jeans. No more nipping into Sephora to snap up a new lipstick or The Body Shop for scrumptious body butter. And to my knowledge there isn't a single Tarzhay anywhere on the high seas.
So what is a twirty girl to do when her beau has to choose between love and money? Or between the love of a lifetime and a pretty good opportunity? Or between a very comfortable relationship and the opportunity of a life time? To be absolutely honest, even though I adore Seth I am not quite ready to bail on my current lifestyle to pursue a life at sea. To me that says it all. When you are truly, madly, deeply in love there is absolutely nothing that would stand in the way of spending the rest of your life with your true love. For Seth, this is a 159 foot yacht on the Mediterranean. And for me, right now it is a gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choos in the front window of Saks.
So we parted as friends. (I know, I know, everyone says you can never go back to being "just friends", but truly we are.) I wish nothing but the best for Seth in the pursuit of his dreams, and I know that he, too, wishes the best for me. We'll keep in touch. We'll exchange emails and holiday cards. He'll send me photos of fabulous sunsets on the Mediterranean. I'll send him photos of the gorgeous Valentino frame bag I got online. He'll promise to take me out to dinner whenever he's in town and we'll reminisce. Then, one day in the hopefully not-so-near future I'll get a thick embossed envelope in the mail…
Anyhoo, am beginning to work myself into major funk. Should probably take a bit of time to wallow. Will hole up in my cozy little condo, snuggled into my cashmere robe and comfy jammies, watching old movies, eating chocolate and reading appropriate/inspiring/venting poetry like lavish lines/luscious lies which inspires me to be strong once again. Will now think happy thoughts. Keep spirits up so as not to be reminded of being single and dateless for upcoming holiday season. In fact, perhaps a round of retail therapy is in order, no? Not only will it boost my spirits, but looking chic is a fail-safe way to ensure I don't remain single and dateless this holiday season!
Chic Looks to Boost Your Spirits
Navy and black: the über-chic color combo this season. Love, love, love this adorable drop waist jumper, especially when paired with patterned tights and a great pair of patent oxfords. Or this gorgeous embellished tunic, which would look fabulous with either opaque tights and skyscraper pumps, or even skinny black jeans and great boots. Finish the ensemble with a colorful tote, fun earrings and bold bangles.
Menswear with an Elegant Twist: You've seen it worn by all the celeb fashionistas from Katie Holmes and Madonna to Angelina Jolie and Sandra Bullock—a shimmering silky blouse paired with menswear trousers. Especially love the look when it is tone on tone. Button-down silk or satin blouse, tucked into wool, satin or even denim trousers and belted with a medium to wide leather belt. Elegant peep toe pumps give a girly feel to the ensemble and a funky handbag gives it a bit more oomph. The silky shirt has enough shimmer and shine to hold its own; simple drop earrings are the perfect finishing touch.
The Full Mounty (feminine version, minus the red coat, poofy pants and goofy hat): In other words, equestrienne chic. Actual riding pants are a bit too just-back-from-mucking-the-stalls, so go with a pair of stretch cord skinny trousers or even cigarette jeans. Add a crisp white blouse, a belted plaid blazer and gorgeously styled riding boots. Don't forget a polished handbag and this horsebit bracelet adds a chic finishing touch.
Putting on the Glitz: What girl doesn't feel glamorous in something shimmery? The key to wearing sequins is to keep it to just one piece. A sequined tank paired with dressy trousers and a girly jacket. Add a pair of patent peep toes and a sexy clutch. Another option is a slinky dress. With that much shimmer you can keep the rest of the look simple and refined. Sheer hosiery, a great pair of skyscrapers, a dainty bracelet and a sleek little bag and you are good to go.
Weekend Chic: Nothing says weekend like a great pair of jeans. This season I am on the lookout for a chic pair of dark washed straight leg jeans that will make my legs look long and lean. Add a soft cashmere turtleneck and top with a contemporary style jacket. Slip into a pair of comfortable heeled booties and slide on delicate bangles for the finishing touch.
Well girls, this little trip down Retail Therapy Lane has really lifted my spirits (and lightened my bank account as well!). I honestly think that I must have sensed the impending end of this relationship (the one with Seth, not with shopping), otherwise I would be completely devastated, curled up in a ball, sobbing and feeling awful. Either that or I am in complete denial and the curling up into a ball, sobbing and feeling awful will come later.
Anyhoo, right now I'm feeling quite content and ready to dive right into the holidays; and, as always, will put my most stylish foot forward!
