What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

It's 98° in the shade and I am positively melting! But I have found a very good way to keep cool: relaxing on my shady terrace in my adorably breezy new sundress and favorite new sandals from Simply Soles (check out the Soles on Sale page—fabulous deals not to be missed!), sipping a tall frosty glass of lemonade and perusing the latest glossy mags. The perfect excuse to catch up on the latest celebrity news and gossip before diving headfirst into another whirlwind weekend.

I'm sure you've heard all the buzz. With July 7, 2007 being hailed as, arguably, the luckiest day of the year (07.07.07) several of my nearest (well, most of them several thousand miles away actually) and dearest (at least one of them, admittedly, a mere acquaintance) friends/family/coworkers have decided that this would be a most auspicious time to tie the knot! Eva Longoria and Tony Parker have even jumped on the Lucky 7 Wedding wagon! I have seven, count them, SEVEN wedding invitations residing beneath my collection of adorable refrigerator magnets as of this writing! In fact, I have now run out of adorable refrigerator magnets and have resorted to using those freebies from Round Table Pizza (which honestly does absolutely nothing for the gilt-edged embossed wedding invitation with pink satin ribbon and tiny little wedding bells that jingle every time I open the freezer door for my Häagen-Dazs.) But I digress…

Anyhoo, am feeling very loved, very popular and very in demand of late, having been invited to so many weddings. However, said popularity has put me in a bit of a predicament. Granted, most of the weddings are just too far away to attend, and a lovely Dyptique candle set or a Crate & Barrel giftcard will suffice quite nicely, but three of those weddings are right here in my neck of the woods, and I inadvertently replied YES to all three without double checking dates. (And before you ask, yes my phone has a calendar function, but I haven't had time to learn how to use it yet; am still downloading ringtones and matching them to friends and family). So what's a girl to do when she must be in three places at once, elegantly coiffed, stylishly attired and fashionably shod to boot?

Well, dearest girls, as luck would have it (and luck has a great deal to do with it), one of the weddings is an afternoon garden wedding alfresco in Berkeley, one of the weddings is an evening dinner dance reception at the Yacht Club (just a hop, skip and jump over the Bay) and the other wedding is actually on Friday evening at Grace Cathedral, with reception following. (Apparently it is also the bride's grandparents' anniversary and since they have been married for 57 years she figured that was all the luck she needed!) So, scheduling conflicts averted, but am now in full fashion crisis mode. Must come up with three completely different ensembles for three completely different weddings. However, am known for ability to rise to any occasion; besides, when have I ever needed an excuse to shop for fashions?

What to Wear to an Afternoon Wedding

A lovely feminine sunfrock is just the ticket. Something light and breezy, easy to mingle and flirt in. A pair of strappy sandals to give an elegant turn to the ankle (not too high—wouldn't want to actually turn the ankle); a gorgeous little clutch bag and a fun pair of earrings to finish.
A very feminine skirt and chic top. Add to this ensemble the perfect pair of peep toe pumps, a chic handbag and a lovely little finger ornament and you will be the belle of the ball.
An elegant wrap dress. If you have great arms, go with a sleeveless dress, perhaps even a halter neck or tank style. Wedge sandals would be great here, especially if you will be spending any time on a brick or stone terrace or grassy area.

What to Wear to an Evening/Formal Wedding

The invitation said "black tie optional", which opens up a few more avenues as far as attire. (No need to go completely floor length with the gown.)

A cocktail gown is perfect for a black tie optional event. Choose one in a more elegant fabric, such as organdy, chiffon, satin, or jacquard.
Stylish details such as embroidery, beading and lace add an elegant touch as well.
A halter neckline is very flattering to most figures, as is an empire style gown. Don't go too bare however, keep it within the realm of good taste!
When all else escapes you, the classic LBD always works for evenings.
Have a little fun with your footwear here, but be sure to wear something you can dance the night away in—strappy satin sandals, pretty patent pumps, sassy slingbacks with a little bling. A chic little evening bag and some gorgeous dangles and you are good to go!

What to Wear to an Black Tie/Religious Wedding

Yes, this may appear a tad paradoxical, but it can be done! Bear in mind that anything sleeveless, strapless or backless is inappropriate for a church, synagogue or mosque, but this doesn't necessarily relegate you to Aunt Marge's closet.

Look for a dress with cap sleeves, or covered shoulders. A flutter sleeve gown is also good. This is perfectly appropriate for both church and reception.
Another option is a long gown (can be strapless, spaghetti strap or tank style) with an elegant jacket to be worn during the ceremony, which can be removed for the reception and dancing.
Some religious locations required that the women cover their heads; an elegant evening wrap works wonderfully, and can also be worn around the shoulders with a strapless gown.
Choose a beautiful pair of shoes to complement your gown. Be tasteful with the jewelry, nothing too flashy or overwhelming. A simple pair of earrings and delicate bangle bracelet would be perfect.
A gorgeous little evening bag to carry your girly essentials, like lipstick, powder compact to keep shine under control and a lovely lace hankie because I always cry at weddings!

A Few Wedding Wardrobe Tips:

Do not wear white. You may be mistaken for the bride and she would be very displeased (as, presumably, would be the groom also).
Do not wear black or sequins to a daytime wedding. While perfectly appropriate for an evening wedding, it's a bit too flash for daywear.
Do not go overboard on makeup, jewelry or scent. You don't want to look like a cheap tramp, especially if you are at the wedding of an ex, and you certainly don't want to asphyxiate those around you with your perfume.
Do not be late for a wedding, EVER! That is the bride's (and only the bride's) prerogative.

Well, dearest girls, it's off to the weddings I go. But first, take a look at these little darlings that I just snapped up and on sale to boot! But I digress. Where was I? Oh yes, final words of wisdom: Look on the bright side, at least I'm not a bridesmaid this time!
