Time for a Change
My most favorite holiday of the year occurred this past weekend, and while I am a very visible fan of all things chocolate, as well as donning a fabulous frock and getting dressed up as someone more exciting than my usual self, my favorite holiday is not Halloween. No, it is the jubilee known to all as The End Of Daylight Savings Time! The best thing about this fabulous festival of fun is that you are granted an entire extra hour of sleep on Saturday night (or rather exceedingly early on Sunday morning, since the actual changing-of-the-clock is supposed to occur at 2:00 a.m.; although I find it extremely weird to think that somewhere there is an anal-retentive control freak setting his alarm for 1:59 a.m. in order to make the exact 2:00 a.m. change.) But I digress.
What to do with that extra hour? In my only-in-my-imagination-wild-and-crazy-youth I would take advantage of that bonus time to stay out with friends, often rushing through my parents' house changing all of their clocks before I left, thereby extending my curfew legitimately. However, now that I am in my twirties I have found the perfect way to spend that extra hour--snuggly, toasty warm in my comfy cozy bed! Attired in sumptuous cashmere or possibly luscious velour (or something stunning if I am in my moviestar mode--click the "view on model" button for full moveistar effect), enfolded in 600 threadcount Egyptian cotton and wrapped in wonderfully fluffy eiderdown---sheer bliss. Throw in a fresh stack of fashion mags, a splendid assortment of Godivas and the first four seasons of Gilmore Girls and it's positive nirvana. (Wish I had someone to write lines for me so I could be as witty and spontaneous as Lorelei.)
To make the most of this annual bounty it's a good idea to do a little planning. This is the time to break out the good bubbly -- as in bubble bath/bath salts/bath oils. For complete self-indulgent decadance (well deserved of course), light scented candles all around the bathtub, have s everal rounds of blissful tunes to listen to, pour yourself a refreshing beverage and settle in for a good, long, hot soak. Next, make certain that you have all of the necessities near at hand: comfy slippers, latest glossies, luxuriant hand creme, yummy nibbles, remote control. This year, to be productive as well as vegetative, I decided to hang my new party frock from the door frame so I could admire it while I lounged about like royalty. The sumptuous surroundings made it much easier for me to plan the proper accoutrement for said frock, as well as contemplate a truly inspired footwear choice. All in all, my evening of self indulgence and debauchery was a success.
However, this year's snugglefest was unceremoniously cut short by the shrilling of the telephone at the unseemly (and very bright) hour of 7:00 a.m. It was my mother, calling from three time zones further east (and therefore further into her sunshiny day) to remind me to set my clock back. I leapt from my bed, heart beating wildly, fully expecting my mother to announce that she was waiting outside with the car running and I had better hurry or I would make the whole family late for church. Then I realized one of the benefits of living nearly 3,000 miles away is the fact that I could take the phone off the hook, stuff the handset under a pillow and fall back into bed for another couple hours of blissful snoozing, without the fear of said parental unit showing up on my doorstep. Which, of course, is exactly what I did!
Things to do when the sun sets at 4:30 in the afternoon:
- Mani/pedi - this is always a good idea, no matter the time zone or time of day.
- Make a pot of soup (Boston Market takeout totally counts as homemade) and a loaf of hot bread (hot-from-the-bakery also totally counts as homemade).
- Make popcorn, jump into your jammies and watch Father of the Bride on DVD.
- Order in pizza, stock up on a wide selection of chocolate confections, invite your best girlfriends over and have a BBC night.
- Just because it's dark outside doesn't mean you have to go home! Legend of Zorro, The Weatherman, Prime, Proof (Gwynnie pre-Apple), Pride and Prejudice, Derailed (Go Jen!)
