Summer Extension for Spring Shoes and Makeup

Does anyone else feel like spring got the shaft this year? It just skipped from cold to hot, with no fabulously springy in-between! Not that I wasn’t dying to break out my new summer handbags, weekend and work (love the patent red), but where went my month of “sunny with a high of 75” and lightweight jackets? What am I supposed to do with my new wellies when there is no warm spring rain in which to tromp?

Sigh. Guess my puddle jumping will have to wait.

Or I could just go on vacay to someplace rainy! When is monsoon season? And where is monsoon season? How many award miles would such a trip cost me? I’m pretty sure Hubby wouldn’t approve this trip on a need-to-use-rain-boots basis, but maybe if I found a touristy reason to travel? It’s been a while since our last trip, really.

Never mind. I’ll leave that research for downtime Googling. Back to business, now.

Time to embrace summer! Spring galoshes neatly stowed away, I’m sure we can find a way to work the rest of those fab spring shoes into our summer styles. And makeup too, while we’re at it. Let’s explore this categorically.

Shoes: This is the obvious starting point. Luckily, summer shoe fashions aren’t straying too far from their spring predecessors this year. Your favorite gladiators, for example, still Net-a-Porterhave months of wearing opportunity ahead of them. As do t-straps and tribal flats. Likewise, don’t store away those gorgeous wedges! They’ll look smashing with your airy dress or flirty-casual skirt and wispy top.

Though spring had a big to-do with neutrals, color is certainly big in shoes this summer so don’t be shy. Sunny yellows and Mediterranean blues, along with sunset oranges and She She pinks, are hitting the streets hard. It’s time to retire your floral spring pumps and instead adopt for some fab thongs for impending beach days.

Lip gloss: Summer shades are a bit brighter and fresher than those more subtle hues of spring, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make good use of that peachy sheer lip gloss you bought last month. In fact, this summer’s trends are all about the natural and hydrated look. Moisturize with a great SPF-infused balm and apply a thin layer of gloss over top. Try pairing your sheer gloss over a darker lip stain for a sassier evening look. A tinted balm is a great one-step option.

Eyeshadow: Summer eyeshadow is all about bold, punchy colors. Afraid of cobalt blue shadow? I don’t blame you. Lucky for us neutral and natural as a color base is an ideal way to start, then perk things up with a smudge of colored eyeliner. This will give a subtler, more natural overall look while still giving your eyes that pop of color this season is calling for. One of my favorite discoveries is L'Oreal HIP (high intensity pigment). The colors are so vibrant and rich — a tiny smudge at the corners of your eyes is perfect for daytime wear, or you can really get dramatic for evenings by lining the entire eye, then smudge and blend.

Remember: Dabbing a bit of highlighter at the inner corner of your eye will give your eyes a real pop! Works wonders on those tired-eyes days. Plus, you get that coveted dewy-eyed starlet look with one quick sweep of a brush!

Blush: Blush was subtly used in spring, if at all, and remains somewhat delicate for summer. Choose bright colors that compliment your skin tone. For example, someone with fair skin (such as yours truly) may choose a peachy-hued pink, while women with olive or darker skin would opt for a fuchsia shade.

tarte has a gorgeous line of cheek stain with colors to suit everyone; a favorite of mine for about two years now. I apply it directly from the container, then blend in with my fingers for a natural look.

Here’s a little trick: rather than apply blush on the apple of the cheeks, sweep it nearer the temple and to your hairline. This technique helps to give your face a more youthful appearance. ‘Nough said.

Accessories: Ideal for casual summer wear, the Mad Coin Necklace from Rachel Abroms Studio is my go-to necklace this season —perfect for everything from jeans and tees to sassy sundresses and sandals! And don't forget about a great pair of shades. It is vital that you protect your eyes, and the delicate skin surrounding them (wrinkles, anyone?) from the damaging rays of the sun. And, of course, the ubiquitous beach tote. You can't do summer without at least one!

Well, enjoy these ever-rising temperatures, ladies. There are plenty of ways to mesh your seasonal styles; I’m only just nicking the surface here. Maybe spring will make a comeback after all, but for now — some monsoon research. Got to get my money’s worth out of these rain boots!

Fit Flop

"What we girls really need is something like a flip flop that tones and trims our legs while we run errands. We have no free time…We Want a Workout While We Walk!” says FitFlop founder and one-time personal trainer Marcia Kilgore. And there you have it - the basis of inspiration for these fabulous flip flops!

The technology behind these extremely comfortable and stylish flip flops enables you to spend hours in them in complete comfort, and they help tone your legs at the same time! The mid-density toe cap area provides a firmer area for toe push-off and faster step speed, and a rest for your legs between steps. The mid footbed is made of a soft wide section of EVA that creates a slightly unstable platform for the foot, which helps activate the leg muscles, providing a toning workout while you walk. The heel strike area is made of high density EVA to absorb maximum shock, and to speed the foot into the softer, less stable mid footbed. Basically, with the fabulous FitFlop you get a workout while you walk!
