First off, I don’t mean the title literally; please don’t whip your tops off and usher summer in Mardi Gras style. Or “spring break” style for that matter. Definitely avoid any girls-gone-wild business! Actually I’m here to encourage quite the opposite, ladies. With the long-awaited and much anticipated onset of summer we can finally unveil our warm weather wardrobes. Time to talk summer tops! Bonus: it’s Memorial Day weekend—good excuse to shop the sales. (As if we really need an excuse to shop!)

One of the biggest wardrobe shifts that occurs at the start of the summer season is the color and style of tops. Gone are the dark and muted shades, having been replaced by vivid hues, cheery floral's and bright colors. Summer tops bring out a vibrant array of fabulous styles we’ve all been itching to wear, and with the weather warm enough we can finally bare our shoulders and don our new frippery.

As the weather turns toasty during summer months, aim to lighten up your wardrobe in two ways:

It's all about down-sizing: lose the bulky layers and keep it simple. And speaking of down-sizing, when heading to your next walk, yoga class or spa, ditch the bulky bag and pack only the essentials: ID, credit card and a few bills in a handy dandy Kewikase. Gorgeous Italian leather in a fabulous selection of colors and styles. Don't leave home without it!

Another trick to keeping cool in the heat is to wear clothing that lets you breathe. Scrap the skin-tight tees and instead opt for looser fitting tops. But remember: the key to looking good is a great fit. Wear tops that are loose enough not to cling to your skin, but fit well enough to show your figure underneath. If it looks sloppy or if you look like you’ve accidentally fumbled into your man’s closet don’t wear it. Think of it this way: you want the outcome to be more Kelly Ripa than Cher. (Or Madonna. Or Mariah. Or any other spandex-loving celebs of note.)

Now that we've got you covered as far as the summer tops go, let's get cracking (or shopping)! Whip that hair up into a carefree, summer-worthy ponytail (unless you’ve pulled a Girly and chopped your hair into a funky bob), slip into your funkiest sandals, grab your favorite hobo and hit the strip mall! (Again, not encouraging the abandonment of ones clothes, though it appears I’ll have to find better words to get my point across.) Happy Memorial Day shopping!
