How to Build a Stylish Work Wardrobe

With the weather still confused about the difference between winter and spring, I find myself stuck indoors yet again. Every sunny moment sends me happily flitting around outside in my new sandals only to find that ominous cloud cover inching over the hills and bringing with it chilly winds. Still, I am hopeful for spring to come and to stay!

After having spent a good part of the early week cleaning out my closet and deciding what to keep (top quality basics and timeless classics) and what to toss (or give to charity), I found myself in need of a few miscellaneous professional wardrobe bits and pieces. Apparently my velvet jacket from last spring isn’t making the cut this time around! Not to mention a few pair of trousers which have obviously shrunk. (Then again, it could be my recent obsession with Cheeto Puffs.) Time to get back to my yoga mat!

Speaking of yoga mat, I have found the perfect way to bring my basic necessities to yoga class without needing to lug a huge purse along! These super cute, super slim wallets by Kewi can hang right on your keychain—the perfect fit for an ID, credit cards and cash! Plus, you can even deck out your keys!

Needless to say, I am now devoted to bolstering my work wardrobe with the hottest new spring styles. Having enlisted the help of She She Me (and her fabulously up-to-date closet), I have a steady head start and am feeling good about this new endeavor.

Pen in hand, I started off creating a list of “needs” as well as a list of “not technically needs, but definitely wants.” I quickly realized it was a waste of time to create two separate lists and instead changed the title of my list to “things to buy.”

Flare-Leg Pants: everything from jeans to trousers and slacks, the wide leg and flare-leg styles are back in the game. Word to the wise: try to avoid the Gumbi look! While the flare-leg is looking very chic, particularly in the sailor style, opt for more subtle flares that still allow for a subtle peek at those gorgeous wedges. And remember: wide-leg styles look better with added height, so opt for heels, wedges or platforms instead of flats.

Tie-Front Blouse: A close-fitting silk or cotton blouse with an empire tie-front is a great look for the office. Professional, yet feminine. Also, look for styles with ¾ or elbow-length sleeves.

High Waist Skirts: This season you’ll see a mass of high waist skirts in gorgeous fabrics and sleek styles. With everything from pencil to full being back in swing, find the perfect fit for your body type.

Light, Feminine Jackets: Though the tailored look has been hot in recent seasons, this spring is blooming with more loose fitting styles with a higher-cut.

Professional Capri's and Bermudas: Nothing says warm weather like showing a little leg! Capri's and Bermudas offer a great alternative to skirts in the work place and give a whole new dimension to your wardrobe. Pair with wedges or sleek peeptoes.

The Perfect White Button-Front Blouse: Must say, the perfect answer to this conundrum eludes me year after year, season after season. I am therefore more determined than ever to find the perfect fitting white button-front! So far I have my eye on this ruched S&D and this Banana wrap, but my eyes are continuously open to all options!

Tailored Pantsuit: A perfectly tailored pantsuit or skirtsuit is just what you need for those Monday morning meetings and big business presentations. Look for a lightweight material that will let you breathe and keep you cool. Definitely a must have for the professional woman.

Chic Dresses: I always feel that warm weather = girly dresses. I love a great dress, and the styles of spring and summer are flirty and beautiful. Since we are dressing for the office here, it's best to keep things sleek, chic and professional—no mini skirts, no plunging necklines, no ultra-bare styles. A classic shift or sheath is always a good choice for the office, as is a dressy shirtwaist. Add a pair of mid-heel slingbacks and a sleek handbag and your are good to go. One of my favorite dresses for spring is this gorgeous twist-front knit dress—flattering for every body type! (While I'm at it, I am going to snap up one of this season's uber-chic full-length dresses—great for an afternoon of shopping or an evening out!)

Of course, we must take all things in moderation. I’ve categorized, budgeted and prioritized my list and will check things off in time. (Personally, I’ll start with the staples and sporadically throw some more exciting pieces in for good measure.)

Enjoy every springtime moment and have a wonderful weekend, girls!
