Five Ways to Put Some Spring in Your Step

With spring supposedly here (somehow the clouds keep finding their way in front of the sun) there is much to do. No no, I’m not talking spring cleaning. That can wait. Ugh, now I’m thinking about spring cleaning. Sigh…

Openly ignoring previous thought and moving on. Along with warmer weather, blossoming flowers and baby birdies come scrumptious new fashions, fabulous new accessories, achievable new goals and somewhat healthier habits. Something about the fresh spring air motivates us and inspires us to snap out of hibernation mode and step into spring as the chic and stylish women we know we are.

With a few simple changes you can usher in the new season without feeling overwhelmed. Now, since we’ve had plenty of articles doting on spring trends in recent weeks I thought I’d skip past that and offer a few simple tips that can get you into spring in just one weekend—this weekend! Read on, girls.

Number One: Best Foot Forward 7forallmankind_brand_125x125_2.21.08

Flirty footwear is always one of the first signs of spring (those gorgeous tootsies have been out of action far too long—get thee a pedicure!), so naturally we begin with pumping up your shoe selection. What better way to literally put spring in your step? Here are some styles I’m loving this spring:

  • The bejeweled thong is great as it doubles as shoe and accessory. Not that all shoes aren’t accessories, but this style can add a nifty little kick to an otherwise plain outfit. They look especially great with this spring's great shirtdresses. And speaking of bejeweled thongs, look at these adorable little flips that I snapped up for my niece! She will be the most popular little tyke at preschool!
  • Colorful pumps are fun and flirty. Color blocks are one of this season’s favorite new trends, so look for pumps to fit the bill.
  • Explore your wild side with snakeskin. This trend can be found everywhere, from sandals to flats to pumps.
  • Glorious gladiators! I guarantee you are going to want at least one pair for the upcoming warmer months, so check out all the fabulous styles! From fabulous flats to sexy skyscrapers the gladiator is definitely the way to go.
  • Not-so-mellow yellow is back in full swing. The bright burst of color is sure to turn heads (in a good way, assuming you’ll not be wearing galoshes) and will certainly cheer you up.

Number Two: Glowing Complexion

With shoes checked off, move on to primping. Sunny weather forecasts call for a fresh skin care regimen, among other primping matters (aka mani/pedis, facials, massages, spray tans). They say the key to healthy, glowing, youthful skin is moisture. (They also say pregnancy can lead to that healthy glow but that’s somewhat of a massive commitment, no?) Always begin and end your day with a refreshing face wash followed by a superbly moisturizing moisturizer. Moisture restores youthful elasticity and volume to skin, warding off wrinkles and other so-to-speak “skin imperfections.” And for those twirty girls looking for some serious Hollywood wrinkle reduction, you might want to check out Frownies Face Lift in a Bag! (Hey, the company has been around for over 115 years—they must be doing something right!)

Also, remember your sunblock. While you may be hankering for an exotic tan after months of winter-pastiness, keep in mind the amount of skin damage done with every visit to the tanning salon (AKA wrinkles and sunspots on your face, neck and hands—the first places to show sun damage ). Your best bet is to avoid the sun altogether, but that's no fun, so just make sure you are covered. At least SPF 30—preferably 50 or higher on your face and neck. If you feel the need for that golden glow, try a great sunless tanning moisturizer, or a spray tan. Try a tinted moisturizer as an alternative, and find your perfect shade of bronzer.

Number Three: Fit and Fabulous

The other key to fabulous skin is actually connected to your overall health. When you’re in shape you not only feel better, you look better. Your body looks smashing and your skin benefits from working out and eating well (as in healthy).

You don’t necessarily have to go out and join a gym in order to get in shape, though it helps to have some kind of support system from classes. Find something you enjoy so you’ll stick with it. For instance, both of my parents are avid runners but yours truly would rather die than run two-to-four miles a day. My solution: yoga. Now if I can only get She She Me to join me! What am I thinking? All I have to do is show her all the adorable yoga wear and she'll be in lotus pose before you know it! Oh, and I’ve got my eye on a pair of FitFlops. Cheap and, apparently, quite effective.

Number Four: Sassy Spring Style

Another great way to usher in spring is through, drum roll: your wardrobe. Natch. By purchasing a few spring staples you can easily work the season’s new colors and fashions into your current collection. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel—just update it! Trade your basic blah tank for something a little sassy. Just make a few smart purchases and you are well on your way to springy goodness. For a more in-depth style study, check back to Shop Girl’s most recent article. And remember, looking good is for amateurs, having style is a talent!

Number Five: Accessories are a Girl's Best Friend!

Lastly, always remember to accessorize. Accessories allow the real you to shine through even the dullest of dress suits. I tend to also look toward jewelry for a simple accessorizing solution to whatever I’m donning that day. Pick up a long necklace or two for a quick and easy fix.

No matter what you are expected or required to wear, you can always bump it up with a fabulous handbag or great shoes. My fascination with aforementioned is certainly no secret here! After all, everyone knows that behind every successful woman is a great pair of heels!

Spring means starting fresh, so put your best foot forward and prep your heart away this weekend, ladies. I think maybe I’ll be picnicking at the beach in my new floppy sunhat. Happy spring!

xoxo
