Perk Up Your Winter Look
Sigh. The early part of this week was beautiful; the sun was shining, blue skies stretched as far as the eye could see and temperatures were optimal. In fact, the weather was so glorious that I unearthed my newly acquired Catherine Malandrino blouse in anticipation of balmy days ahead. As is normal this unpredictable time of year (unpredictable to those of us who neglect to check forecasts), the sun has decided on a whim to hibernate once more and allow a cold front to swoop in on my spring wardrobe excitement.
I suppose I was a bit too optimistic and opted not to check the weather forecast before popping outside yesterday. Needless to say, I was met with such an arctic blast as to immediately reverse my leg-shaving efforts! Running late (as usual) I had no time to change and was forced to don a wintry coat over my springy skirt and top, and ditch my adorable open-toe heeled gladiators in favor of sensible boots which totally left me looking like a confused little twit. Which apparently I am! At least the cold didn’t reverse my freshly-bronzed efforts, and I left feeling somewhat mollified that my funky bracelet caught what little solar reflection there was.
After yesterday’s frigid fiasco I’ve made two commitments to myself: 1) check forecast before exiting home; and 2) perk up my winter wardrobe to keep my cold weather woes at bay.
The best part about perking up one's wintry wardrobe is it doesn't have to take a hefty toll on the pocketbook. Simply add a few gorgeous pieces to brighten up your winter basics and you are well on your way! Remember: Spring 2008 calls for bright tropical colors mixed with warm neutrals (check out the Pantone fashion color report—the colors even have cute names, like “Snorkel Blue” and “Cantaloupe”). And for a quick fix, a swipe of spring color on the lips and nails goes a long way to rehabilitating one's winter soul! Just remember to exfoliate those chappy lips (try the Luxury Lip Exfoliant from Picadilly and Tallulah) before you smooth on the gloss. And while you're at it, check out the Luxury Vitamin E Emollient—perfect for chapped lips, rough knees and elbows and it also helps heal and prevent scars!
As I’ve already mentioned (last month), sheer is in. From floaty blouses, halters and skinny tops to delicate drapey dresses, a mere wisp of chiffon or silk is the way to go. While many of these gorgeous items are lined, make certain your underpinnings are up to snuff (cami's and tanks are only meant to last through one season, so invest in some new basic layering items). Clearly, sheer is not necessarily a winter-friendly fashion, but with a few twists it can be. Layer your sheer lacy dress over dark wash denim and top with a leather jacket for a feminine take on biker chic! Or cinch a fabulous floaty tunic over your basic cashmere turtleneck, opaque tights and skyscrapers for a night on the town.
A chic and stylish way to incorporate spring is through accessories, for as we all know, accessories make the ensemble! In my world, this usually means handbags and shoes, but I have taken a recent interest in all things sparkly. This chain and quartz necklace really speaks to my inner princess, and also looks spectacular with these gorgeous dangles. And as for fabulous footwear, what a perfect way to show off your personality and flair. Nothing says spring like sassy peep toes (and a fabulous pedicure!) Candy colors are hot in the accessory zone so don’t shy away from bright and cheery!
And don't forget about scarves—hello! Fitting this one into your winter pieces is a cinch. What a perfect way to add a little pop to your sweater dress. Explore different ways to wear your cheery scarves. Wear it loose, bowed, wrapped, as a headband and even as a belt. Looks great with your new wide leg pants.
Über-chic shorts are also a great spring staple. As seen on the runways during Fashion Week, wear your short shorts over opaque tights or leggings to keep those goose bumps at bay as yours truly experienced earlier this week. If you’re skeptical about this plan of action, pop in “Music and Lyrics” and check out Drew's adorable take on the trend (yes, I’m watching it as I type). It's an especially great way for those of us with very pale skin to take advantage of the trend unselfconsciously. It's not all short shorts however; bermudas, walking shorts, city shorts, cargo shorts—the list is endless!
I’m swiftly becoming distracted by the Fall 2008 collections after the recent Milan RTW shows. I’m totally in love with a certain Diane Von Furstenberg gown. Make that several Diane Von Furstenberg gowns. Not to mention some Nanette Lepore pieces. Okay, time to refocus—I’m a full two seasons ahead of myself now! I’m going to delve back into mixing my winter and spring pieces to find exactly what I need to add to my collection. Stay warm, ladies, and stay happy!

And don't forget to set your TiVo for the Oscar's on Sunday! I know you'll be watching live, but it's always worth a second, third and fourth look to check out the Oscar highlights (fabulous fashions, jewels, hair, makeup, handbags, shoes, etc. etc.). I am sooooo ready for a red-carpet event!
xoxo,
