Fall Style Preview Since mid-June, when school let out for summer, I’ve certainly enjoyed not having to rush out the door in the mornings to catch the bus. I’ve loved not having to shoe-horn creating a nutritious-yet-cool peanut-free lunch into my morning routine (already jammed with arguing about whose turn it is to feed the dog, arguing about which shirt really goes with plaid shorts, arguing about whether the bed counts as made if the pillow is still on the floor, arguing about… well, you get the idea). I have been joyous about the leisurely approach to the day’s activities, if not exactly enthusiastic about the entourage I have to drag to the market with me (“She looked at me!”). And the weather… ahh, the weather. Well, if you live in New England, it’s been pretty much cool and raining since Memorial Day, which makes the ten days of sunny weather we’ve had seem so much sweeter. And we’ve really gotten our money’s worth out of the new rug in the playroom, since that’s where we’ve been every blessed afternoon for ten weeks. But really, when we come to brass tacks, I can’t WAIT for school to start again! I’ll be by myself for three sweet mornings this fall, and while I adore my children and I’m so happy to see them get off the bus or run down the steps of the preschool, let’s be realistic. I could hardly stop myself from laughing out loud at the man who called me in error last week and launched into his speech: “I got your name from the list of local home-schooling parents, and I’m wondering if you’d like to join our group yada yada yada…” So it’s probably pretty evident that I’m fired up to start shopping for our family’s fall necessities. I’m keeping a close eye on the bottom line this year, but for certain there are great ways to collect all the basics that’ll have my cherubs (and me!) looking spectacular once the “big yellow chariot from heaven” (my friend Laura’s words) rolls down the block in a few weeks. Think of all the fun activities I’ll have time for once my mornings are my own again… Coffee with a Girlfriend: I’ll stroll into the local brewhouse looking sassy (but not inappropriate) in slim denims and a ruffle-necked menswear blouse under a little wool jacket. Or maybe a great tunic and tights. My feet will be comfy in darling detailed flats and I’ll have the day’s essentials tucked into my hot-diggity-bargain hobo. I’ll simply push my shades up on top of my head and relax for the forty-five minutes until pick-up, sharing my first uninterrupted girlfriend convo in six years. Yogalates Class: Now that I can safely say that my pregnancy and nursing days are behind me, there is no longer an excuse for the muffins that drape over my waistband, and tunics will surely go out of vogue again some day. Now is my chance to take care of me and whip myself into shape for next spring’s family escape vacation (hey, a mom can dream, right?). I’m luring myself into the gym on a regular basis with the promise of new sleek workout wear top and bottom, and a light, springy new pair of sneakers. Once the muffins are gone, I’ll reward my diligence with a slightly more significant bit of technology; here’s hoping! Shopping By Myself: Just think of all the comparison shopping, new-item-trying, deal-hunting I’ve missed by having little “helpers” with me all the time! While I’m not sure this activity really warrants a specific wardrobe selection, it will certainly be nice to wear my new cardigan and funky screened tee without worrying that someone will grind Goldfish into my shoulders or drip juice box down the front of my new cropped trousers and onto the toes of my efficient-yet-stylish trainers.Missing My Angels: As much as I try to convince myself I’ll be glad of the alone time, I know I’ll be waiting for pickup with bells on. Well, maybe not bells, but certainly a cute pencil skirt, flat boots with a little biker edge (hey, I’m a mom, not a geriatric), and a cute leather jacket with a hip scarf. Girls young and old will look adorable in swing tops with details like embroidery or ruffles over slim jeans and ballet flats, or the classic day dress with tights and boots. (Lucky little girls – this one looks so comfy!) Remember: it’s better to have fewer outfits of higher-quality fabrics, cuts and styles than dozens of choices made from inferior materials that’ll wear out before the end of the semester! Teachers notice. Enjoy the last days of your summer vacation, and make sure to spend extra one-on-one time with each of your children before the hectic fall schedule starts up again, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day.
