5 Steps to Perfect Skin

I am resolving this year to treat my body to celebrity-style skincare. With the cold, dry air wreaking havoc on my poor skin day after day I am desperate for some serious indulging. The one problem with this resolution of mine is that I don't have the requisite time for said celeb-style pampering.

Still, something must be done about this winter dryness! And so, I have developed the following daily skincare how-to routine, which fits easily into my customary morning practices:

Step 1: Shower Time. Start with an exfoliating body scrub to scuff away dry skin. Follow with moisturizing body wash. I have two types of body wash in my shower-both moisturizing, but one with added shimmer to counteract my "winter pale". Remember your hair-the harsh cold winds from the outside and heat damage from the hair dryer and straightening iron collaborate against us this time of year. This smart leave-in conditioner is exactly what it says it is-a miracle! and has become my BHF (best hair friend, that is).

Step 2: Post-Towel, Pre-Clothing Care. I used to rush through the towelling off to avoid freezing to death, until I discovered this fabulous towelling robe! Fabulously fluffy and it keeps you toasty warm while absorbing excess moisture. It's best to apply moisturizer before you are completely dry, to give your skin extra hydration. Again, I recommend a variety of moisturizing care to accommodate different areas of the body. I use a gorgeously scented hydrating body butter for the décolletage, shoulders and neck. Then a tinted moisturizer for the legs and arms. I have a heavy duty cream for my tootsies, which tend to suffer for the sake of slingback fashion.

Step 3: Dress Appropriately! Consider two things: the weather outside and the conditions inside your daily workplace and/or home. Chic and cozy can easily coexist! Keeping your skin protected from the harsh winter chill will preserve the glow and hydration you have put so much effort into fashioning. If you are just itching to wear those bare spring fashions a bit early, then compromise! Pair those gorgeous crops you've been dying to wear with a great pair of tall boots. Layer your new sheer blouse over a thin turtleneck to obtain a sophisticated (warm) look without having to sacrifice your desire to embrace your new springy tops.

Step 4: About Face. This is clearly the most important step, and taking the time to properly care for your face will pay off big time in years to come. Facial skin is very tender and sensitive, therefore, always wash your face with a good moisturizing facial wash. After washing (and drying by patting-not rubbing-the skin softly with an absorbant towel, natch) consider a peel or mask. I use a mask once or twice each week, depending on how long I've overslept. Face masks and peels are FABULOUS with all the variety available. Use a firming mask on Mondays (to combat the inevitable Monday-long-face syndrome) and an anti-stress mask on Fridays (to recoup from the week's trauma and negligence due to said oversleeping). Tone with a spritz of citrus and you'll energized and ready to start the day fresh!

Next step for the face is tweezing and tinting. Since most bathrooms seem to have non-tweeze-friendly lighting, I was entirely pleased to find these ingenious illuminating tweezers! Makes it ten times easier to find those little hideaways I always manage to miss. So after brow touch-up I perform my daily attempt at pigmentation: Jurlique Bronzer. Moisturizing and bronzing in one nifty glass bottle. I use this EVERY morning and swear by it! Apply a thin layer for a gorgeous natural glow.

Last step is a moisturizing sunblock. I've been using Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch for two years now and love the anti-shine and light scent. Now you're hydrated and ready for makeup, touch-ups and a thirst-free day (at least epidermally speaking).

Step 5: Mani/Pedi. Don't forget the appendages! There is nothing like a fresh mani/pedi to put a smile on your face and a gloss on your tootsies.
