Lotions and Potions Guide The most outrageously exciting thing happened last night. Hubby and I were on our way home from dinner at our favorite little Italian restaurant. I was feeling gorgeous in my sexy summer halter and very fun new strappy sandals and admiring my reflection in the shop windows when I noticed something bouncing in the pet store window. I don't really know what happened next, but I do know that hubby and I now have a kitten! I've ordered a truckload of apparent kitten care necessities for little Stella. (Hubby got to choose the name—seems he has a bit of a Brando thing going and has always wanted an excuse to stand on the back porch yelling, "Stellaaaaa!") I am a bit worried, however, as She She Me is in town for the weekend and is bringing Zac over to meet our little fluff. How often do tiny animals of different varieties hit it off? She She Me seems to think they will be the best of friends. Cute as they are, kittens do have their weak points. Like the fact that they hide under couches when you want to hold them. And they tend to jump in their water dishes (which happen to be filled to the brim with Evian), resurfacing only to track the water across your gorgeous new art piece which was previously undisturbed on the greatroom floor (even though you asked Hubby to frame and hang said painting at least twelve times in the past five days). And, most importantly, the fact that their tiny paws (and sharp claws) wreak havoc with your sensitive—and previously flawless—skin. The moment she clawed my funky new Armani's (note to self: keep all precious articles of clothing (especially lovely delicates), fabulous shoes (note the great price—I constantly amaze myself at my ability to sniff out a bargain), and otherwise damageable accessories at least six feet off the ground and/or behind closed doors), I nearly had a heart attack. They are soooo not meant to be distressed! Why couldn't it have been my Seven's—what's a few more snags there anyway? So I went into the closet to change into something more kitten-proof, only to find that I love all of my apparel equally (especially my new wrap dress and ankle-stap sandals) and was unwilling to surrender any of it to the little tiger. Needless to say, I went out and purchased a couple of ten-dollar tops that practically scream “destroy me” just to have suitable kitten wear. Worth it. Noble efforts, though they were, these solutions came too late. My Armani's now have a snag, and any skin exposed to tiny Stella has suffered a thrashing of sorts. Still worth it, though, as it gave me the perfect excuse to go out and purchase luscious new lotions and potions to sooth my pin-cushioned limbs! Not to mention a few necessary extras here and there. I consider “product acquisition” a hobby—like people who collect stamps. Only this is rewarding research and much more practical for the now . I find that summer is always the perfect time for trying out new moisturizers. The heat re Oh, that feels better! Now, as a general body moisturizer I'm testing out several products (research, remember). Olay Body Quench, mostly because it has an appealing name (my skin certainly feels thirsty) and a funky purple bottle. Also VS Beauty Skin-Silkening Body Lotion in Love Spell because it smells divine—and I must say, after a warm shower and a good leg shave, these gams are smooth as ever. In fact, this glorious little wisp of lace is just what I need to highlight this new degree of smoothness. Along with moisturizing, I have added to my daily (well, almost daily) schedule a relaxing evening bath. I love Essencia's Sweet Lavender Bath Gel for its subtle scent and gentle cleansing. Twenty minutes with a good book and a tub full of bubbles does wonders for my stress levels. My hair care supply also in need of an update, so I nabbed several new products for trial. I am completely obsessed with trying new conditioners—I switch mine out every few days. My trusty fallback is and will likely always be Pantene Pro-V. It smells great, is available everywhere and doesn't dent my bank account (though, can't say it has done to my hair what it boasts in commercials). My newest discovery, however, is Nioxin Bionutrient Actives Scalp Therapy which completely works to repair damage. And then there's this Kerastase sculpting cream, which is just fabulous. I also love this new smoothing potion (and the fact that it truly is a “potion”). If there is one product I entirely enjoy collecting it's perfume. I especially love a new fragrance in a fabulous countertop-worthy container (have always been tempted to buy Britney's line simply because of her pretty bottles). This fragrance by L'Occitane proclaims summer even in its name. Very refreshing on a hot summer's day. And for a hot summer's night, I love Dior Addict. While walking from parking lot to store entrance during my lunch break today, I realized my constant hand washing rituals at home (hubby's a tad allergic to Stella) had taken a toll on the state of my manicure. Luckily, I had just read up on my Glam updates and found myself fully prepared to face the polish aisle. I picked up this sexy summery color —will look wonderful with the new ring hubby bought me for our anniversary. Oh, I'm not supposed to know about that. Wait—where do you put kittens while you paint your nails? I'm beginning to wonder how I completely neglected to consider what life with a kitten would be like. From my babysitting experience (which is vast, mind you), I'd say kittens are like a cross between a snuggly baby and a rebellious teenager. They are so cute, and you just can't help but sweep them up into your arms for a cuddle. Yet when you try to put them back down they latch on with all ten tiny claws and there goes the lace blouse—again. I sometimes wonder if felines truly are “domesticated” after all. Oh, it has only been one day and I am acting as though this kitten will take over my life. I'm sure I'll figure it out soon enough (though tips are always welcome). Thank goodness for my bounteous bevy of lotions and potions, and the assurance that I will emerge from this experience silky smooth and smiling pretty! Happy researching, girls!
