Party Prep
I am so tired. I have been shopping, baking (yes, that's right) and primping my home for the past two weeks in an attempt to prepare for the holidays. I have shoved and I have been shoved during my recent, and perilous I might add, shopping experiences (one episode nearly ended in a lost toe). I have burnt my bundt cakes and I am completely out of gift wrap. And all this before my first married Christmas!
Now that the whining is over, the excitement begins. Christmas is only days away and the parties—oh, the parties! Of course there will be parties tonight, and then come the Christmas Eve parties. And naturally, the much-anticipated New Year parties which last 'til the wee hours. But I must say, the greatest thing you can hope for this time of year is to be blessed enough to have a British friend. The reason: Boxing Day Parties! Naïve as we Americans are, we do not celebrate the holiday that is Boxing Day. This holiday is celebrated the day after Christmas—a day which we often see as “cleanup day.” I envy you if you are fortunate enough to have this one extra party to attend this season, as I have moved into what appears to be a Brit-less zone.
But enough of that. As exciting as the upcoming events are, this plethora of parties can cause a somewhat normal (I flatter myself) person to lose a small bit of sanity. So before you parade into those hip and happening holiday bashes, a word to the wise: people will notice whether or not you took the time to bedeck your own halls. Proper preparation is key. And seeing as it is the 11th hour, diet and exercise are simply useless and painful practices, best saved for aprés New Year and the inevitable resolutions. Which brings me to the topic closest to my heart--the bounteous bevy of beauty products currently available for your/my holiday investment. And investment is the proper term to be applied here. Glossy hair, dewy skin, kissable lips, smoky eyes, and an alluring scent are justifiable investments indeed. Bonus: now is undeniably the best time to stock up on these staples-of-life as they are likely to come with freebies and samples! If you have been a very good girl, you may find one or more of these goodies tucked into your Christmas stocking--happy thought indeed!
As my little holiday gift to you, I have put together a list of fun products and helpful tips to help carry you through and keep you looking fresh and fabulous for your upcoming holiday parties.
The Quick Fix: A soothing facial, massage, or mani/pedi will help you to feel rejuvenated and fresh for your impending adventures. Exfoliating your skin (body, face, hands, feet) will give you a glow and help your skin to feel silky soft.
The Body Fix: First, smooth on that moisturizer. Try something from the Nivea Body line, or use Jergens Soft Shimmer Moisturizer for an extra catch-the-light-sparkle. Also, it is a known fact that scent assists memory, so apply your favorite perfume to substantiate your impact. Layer your scent to make it last--scented bath oil, body spritz, perfume. Keep your scent light and airy, stay away from heavy, musky scents if there is going to be a crowd.
The Eye Fix: Keep your eye makeup natural (don't overdo it with extreme colors or intense amounts of shadow or liner), but throw in a sparkly shadow to mix things up. Sephora's I Wish Palette contains a fantastic combination of natural and shimmer. Be sure to get adequate sleep so as not to have duffle-bag eyes.
The Lip Fix: Pinks and reds are beautiful against a winter backdrop. Shine and shimmer will help your lips to stand out and will accentuate your fun and girly side, so live it up! I just bought these for my sisters (including she she me and myself)—they have fabulous color and shimmer, plus they smell divine!
The Hair Fix: If you wear it down, add some curl or wave to your hair. This will add volume and bounce and will frame your face beautifully. If you wear your hair up, wear decorative bobby pins or hair clips to make the look more festive than “office updo.”
The After Party Fix: In order to stay vibrant and cheery for ALL of your shindigs this season, give yourself adequate recuperation time. After a night of dancing, go home to a nice foot spa or have your significant other give you a foot massage. (Or even a full-body massage! It never hurts to ask.) Take a warm bubble bath with some holiday music. Light a few holiday-scented candles and turn off the lights for some peace and aromatherapy time. After your soak, moisturize your skin and maybe treat yourself to a facial.
The Overnight Fix: Lastly, I do not hesitate to recommend you get a good night's sleep (which is apparent as I have already mentioned it once). We are so lucky this year to have our holidays fall on the weekends! This makes the “good night's sleep” ever more plausible and guiltless. Moisturize your face at night to avoid the drowsy morning-after-party look. After pampering yourself and sleeping well, you'll be ready for another go!
Remember, not all of your “parties” will be just that. Some will be cocktails and conversations, while some will be boogie and blend. A party at the in-laws may simply include opening gifts and watching a holiday flick. So dress and adorn appropriately for each occasion.
Party well and keep your composure, girls. And remember the host/hostess gifts!
