The How-To For Your 'Do
Apparently the part-tousled; part-coiffed hair we're seeing everywhere from runways to beauty pages is a much about product as it is your hair's natural texture. Huge sigh of relief out of me, a girl with stick-straight hair for nearly twirty years now. Every spring I get an itch to try to re-create (in the privacy of my own bathroom of course) those perfectly un-perfect waves. And every spring it's a curling disaster.

Alas, I sought help. Feeling down about the one-year anniversary of the end of real (as in no one loses weight) TV I found myself in my other comfort zone - the hair chair. As I explained my hair dilemmas to Dawn - hair guru, able listener and fantastic head masseuse - and held up pictures from magazines to further emphasize my point, she quickly assured me curly, non-curls were an hour away.

Immediately she went to work as I chattered on about my theory of what Carrie and Big were doing now and how I couldn't get into Magna like I did Protégé. In between rants (it seems she too was having a bit of telly withdrawal), D made sure to explain to me what she was doing to ensure my fabulous do. The reporter in me made sure that I jotted it all down (while being diffused, mind you).

DIY Tousled Hair

1. First apply Bumble & Bumble styling creme at the roots of your just-washed hair. Another fabulous product to begin with is DuWop Hands 2 Hair Styling Creme.
2. Rub a generous amount of B&B Curl Conscious Curl Creme throughout your entire head. (Go easy near your roots to avoid a greasy look.) We used the fine to medium potion because it has hold to it and encourages the curl. A major plus to this application is that B&B Curl Creme smells like paradise would (all coconutty and beachy) and is not sticky AT ALL. (To purchase, call 919.839.8333)
3. Next is the meticulous part. Separate strands of hair into one inch sections and twirl. (This is where I usually fall apart.) Depending on the effect you're going for,you can do your entire head, just your crown or only near your face. This method will give you a more uniform curl. (And be sure to curl the strands in the front AWAY from your face - will prevent those baby fine hairs from poking out.)
4. If you're impatient, and I am, take to the diffuser, but be sure to use it on low power and low heat. Drying your 'do too fast will cause frizz. If you're a lady of leisure and can air dry, just try to keep your head still and 'twirls' intact.
5. Cut the diffuser before drying fully for that slightly-coiffed look. Add volume by 'scrunching' (not the technical term, I'm sure) from top or underneath your hair. DO NOT SCRUNCH THE SIDES. Straight from the stylist's mouth, "it will give you the A-frame look." And that is soooo not what you want.

Voilà, spring hair in 5 simple steps.
