Eye Spy - A
Guide to the Colorful Spring Eye
Face it.
If you haven't mastered the super-sultry, mildly-deranged smoky
eye, you never will. And finally, it no longer matters. Dark is
out and color is in - everywhere. Even on your eyes. It's hard to
believe, I know, but the word on Chic Street is that the hottest
eyes for spring are painted in candy
colors -- think pale
pinks, rich peaches, shimmery greens and flirty blues. (Best
news is, this eye is suitable for the office
and the dance floor .)
So inspired by this onslaught of color
(and the banishment of black eyes), I
have decided to update not only my wardrobe
(as well she she me's - goodness what a task...what is it with
her an cable knit sweaters?), but my vanity
as well. After all, what good are new spring
clothes if you don't have the face to match?
Getting
started...
First,
I rid myself of clutter. I said good-bye to old lipsticks, experimental
eye liners (was silvery-purple ever chic?) and dated concealers.
With a few runway looks in hand, I sought the advice of my local
make-up gurus at the product counters. (I knew that it was going
to take more than my own efforts to secure my spring face). She
had beaucoup knowledge to bestow, the most important thing
being to never underestimate the power of the brush. Good
eye shadow brushes are a must, and both a contoured and an
angled one are necessary to achieve shadow greatness.
While I sat
in her chair and silently prayed that she would make me look like
Carolyn Murphy, I managed to get a few tips on how we can achieve
this runway look at home. The main thing to remember is that spring
is a softer, more subtle season. This is true of your make-up. Think
sheer colors and delicate shades.
The Real
How To:
1.Sweep entire
eyelid with a neutral base shadow (I like Mac's
Cream Colour Base in Vague). This will help to set the brighter
colors. Try a soft yellow or a pale
champagne-ish (she she me swears by Bobbi
Brown's Eye Shadow in Bone) shadow for the base.
2. With a contoured
brush, sweep the dominant color (mine will be Smashbox's
orange duo - I love, love, love it) from the corner to the center
of the lid and into the crease. Do not get up onto the brow bone
or you will look like a clown. That said, you really want to make
sure you get some good color
going. After all, you do want it to be noticeable.
3. With an angled
eye shadow brush, apply a lighter
color shadow on the brow bone. Blend from center of brow bone
area out to edge. (Shimmery
pinks work best in this spot.)
4. With same angled brush, apply a light dusting of the same shadow
beneath the eye in the inner corner. (This adds a little come-hither-ness
to your candy-colored eye.)
5. Line rim of eye (top and bottom) with a brown
liner. (I just love cream eye liner for its easy application.
Less messy than liquid and softer than regular pencil. Try Smashbox's
Cream Eye Liner in Midnight Brown for a your day-to-night look.)
Note also: a deep green eye liner (she she me loves Smashbox's
Midnight Green) can be substituted for brown or even navy, depending
on your coloring.
6. Apply black mascara liberally. To make lashes thicker, practice
your eye-batting technique against the wand several times. (We
at the HQ stand by Maybelline's
Great Lash Mascara. The ole pink and green standard has yet
to clump or smudge on us.)
And there you
have it. Spring's saucy eyes brought to your bathroom by way of
the runway. Who knew we can achieve couture-worthy eyes with a duo
of shadows, a cream liner and our trusty black mascara?
Final Tip:
To ensure that you don't look like an artist's palette, pair your
new bright eyes with a pale, glossy
lip and light, rosy blush.
Et voila,
Vous êtes aussi joli qu'une robe
de printemps! (That's "pretty as a spring dress"
in English.)
Until next time.
